Biographical history
William Royce Butler was born January 23, 1914. He was Director of Libraries and Professor of Bibliography at the University of Manitoba from 1971 to 1979. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 1939, a Master of Library Science and Master of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkley in 1959, and a Master of Arts from the University of Toronto.
Custodial history
MSS SC 26 was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Professor Royce Butler in 1978. MSS SC 65 was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Dr. Butler and his wife in March 1980.
Scope and content
MSS SC 26 contains a copy of Professor Butler's lecture "The Form of the Book and the Shape of the Mind", delivered in 1978 at the Winnipeg Centennial Library as part of the Manitoba Library Event, a press release and a calendar of events for Manitoba Library Event and Children's Book Festival in November 1978. MSS SC 65 consists of a photocopy of Loys Le Roy's pamphlet, "De la Vicissitude des Choses," and a bibliographic history of the first edition prepared by Butler.
