Biographical history
Ray Phillips was born in 1941 in Winnipeg to John and Edna Phillips. The grandson of the late Walter J. Phillips (a Canadian artist known for his watercolours and woodcuts), Ray Phillips pursued a similar path as an artist, studying at the University of Manitoba’s School of Fine Art. Working at his father’s company, Phillips Advertising, Ray Phillips worked as a commercial artist. He has also created numerous watercolour paintings.

The fonds was donated to the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collectionsby Ray Phillips in 2016.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of one essay draft by Canadian artist Walter J. Phillips and posthumously edited by his grandson, Ray Phillips. The essay, titled Back to Nature, describes landscape painting.
