Rarihokwats

ca. 1936 -

Rarihokwats has held a wide variety of positions during his lengthy working career. He holds a Masters of Arts in the Teaching Sciences, Antioch-Putney Graduate School 1968. He speaks English, Spanish & some Mohawk.

From 1961-1965 he was a director of family & child services & child care supervisor with the Children’s Aid Society. Followed by community development officer for Indian Affairs, Akwesasme (1965-1967). Rarihokwats is founder, publisher & editor of Akwesasne Notes & Speaker for White Roots of Peace. He was the recipient of the Marie Potts Award of the American Indian Press Association; the Robert Kennedy Award for Journalism in the Service of Minorities, & a World Council of Churches Anti -Racism Award between (1968-1977). He has been an elder & advisor to an American First Nation, particularly in regard to its educational projects, genealogical research for the federal resignation process (1978-2014). He developed from concept to full operation a Healing Lodge under contract for Correctional Services Canada & served as its first CEO (1997-2001). He worked on historical research & program development for the Manitoba Dakota First Nations (1998-2007). He was a researcher for a major First Nations test case (2002-2014). Rarihokwats is an advisor & historian on Treaty for NWT First Nations (Akaitcho) (2005-present). A negotiator & senior advisor, Treaty 1 First Nations in major legal actions related to pipelines & surplus federal military base (2007-2012). An advisor to Canadian Ombudsman regarding strategic planning & communications (2008-present). He provided assistance to membership of a First Nation in developing constitution and laws & in developing capacity to work together for the future (2009-present). Facilitator of workshops for a large First Nation on treaty-related issues, nation building & political strategies (2009). He was a principal researcher advisor for the successful Norway House Tax Fishers Tax Exemption case resulting in a victory in the Federal Court of Appeal (2009-2012). He did historical research for Saskatchewan First Nation advancing a Treaty-based case related to failure of the federal Crown to pay compensation for lands offered by Treaty for immigration & settlement (2010-present). Rarihokwats was a visiting professor, University of Ottawa, Departments of Geography & Aboriginal studies re: Indigenous Knowledge & “Indigenous Peoples, Settler Colonialism, Decolonizing, & Healing Reconstruction” (2011-2014). He is currently a consultant to a Board of community trust involved in community improvement & economic development enterprises (2013-present).
