Biographical history

Norman Lightfoot is a Canadian naturalist, photographer and cinematographer who was trained in audio-visual arts at the University of Guelph. Born in Dublin, Ireland on February 7 1936, his family then moved throughout Africa and the United Kingdom during his father’s military career. The family moved to Ontario in the years following the Second World War, although Lightfoot would travel back to Africa annually to guide safari trips. His primary interest has always been images of animals, and upon entering university he studied seals in Canada’s north, taking video footage that would later be used for television broadcast. His career has gone on to include works such as the film Images of the Wild (about Robert Bateman), as well as work on many television shows, including Profiles of Nature and Canadian Wilderness Journal. He has worked with other notable Canadian naturalists such as Robert Taylor and Robert Bateman, helping to draw attention to the animals and the environment of not only Canada, but also the world. Norman Lightfoot currently resides in Cambridge, Ontario.

The collection was donated to the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in December of 2015 by Norman Lightfoot, via John Toone (documentary filmmaker).
