Notice biographique

MacKay Residential School was located in Dauphin, Manitoba. Officially opened September 1957 for Indigenous students, the school was operated by the Anglican church of Canada until the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development took control in 1969. Reverend Canon A. J. Sacrase was the first principal of MacKay Residential School in 1957 when the school opened. MacKay Residential School was officially closed on June 30, 1988.

MacKay Residential School served as a residence and school until the students reached grade 8. Most students came from along the Hudson Bay line down to The Pas, from Fort Alexander, Pine Falls and Hodgeson. The list includes: Black River First Nation, Chemawawin Cree Nation, Bunibonibee Cree Nation (Oxford House), Brokenhead Ojibway First Nation, Cross Lake Band of Indians, Cross Lake Band of Indians, Fisher River Cree Nation, Fort Alexander First Nation (Sagkeeng), Fox Lake Cree Nation, God's Lake First Nation, Hollow Water First Nation, Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation (Jackhead), Lake Manitoba First Nation, Lake St. Martin First Nation, Little Saskatchewan First Nation, Manto Sipi Cree Nation (God's River), Misipawistik First Nation (Grand Rapids), Mosakahiken Cree Nation (Moose Lake), Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (Nelson House), Northlands Dene First Nation (Lac Brochet), Norway House Cree Nation, O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation (South Indian Lake), Opaskwayak Cree Nation (The Pas), Peguis First Nation, Pinaymootang First Nation (Fairford), Pine Creek First Nation, Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, Sayisi Dene First Nation (Tadoule Lake), Shamattawa First Nation, Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, Skownan First Nation (Waterhen), Tataskweyak Cree Nation (Split Lake), War Lake First Nation, Wuskwi Sipihk First Nation (Indian Birch), and York Factory First Nation.

Portée et contenu

The fonds predominantly consists of photographs of children and staff of the school as well as alumni. There are also several newspaper clippings, CDs containing the photographs, and annual reports for hockey, awards, and scholarships.
The fonds is composed of the following series: Textual Materials; CDs; Negative; Photo Albums; Photographs. The series Photograph is further divided into 8 subseries: Portrait Photographs; MacKay Residential School; School Events; Extracurricular Activities; Holidays and Celebrations; School Performances; Staff, Students, and Alumni; Community Churches.

Some photographs are in a fragile condition. A photograph under the subseries ‘School’ has two photos stuck back to back to each other.

Since the photographs were donated in no particular order, they were arranged at the archivist’s discretion into school related themes, occupations (students, staff, alumni), and school portraits. They were further arranged into subseries.
