Name of creator
John A. Machray was born in 1865 and was a prominent Winnipeg lawyer who was appointed Bursar of the University of Manitoba in 1919. In 1932, he was accused of defalcating over $900,000 of university endowment funds. In a much publicized trial, he pled down to a count of defalcating $500,000. Due to his age and ill health, Machray was sentenced to only 7 years in prison. He died in 1933.
The fonds was originally classified as UA SC 30 but was reclassified in 2005 as MSS SC 162 to more accurately reflect its provenance.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of two scrapbooks detailing University of Manitoba Bursar John A. Machray's embezzlement of $900,000 of the University's endowment fund. Each scrapbook contains articles about the scandal from the Winnipeg Tribune and the Manitoba Free Press.
