Historique

Kay (Sawchuk) Kuzyk (1930-2015) was born in Winnipegosis, Manitoba, to Michael and Juliana Sawchuk. The family relocated to Transcona, where Kay took piano lessons, participated in the local branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Youth, and graduated from Transcona High School in 1947. In 1949, she married Fred. In addition to her responsibilities as the mother of six children (Teresa, Mimi (Marilyn), Monica, Myron, Christine and Kathryn) and a grandmother, Kay was a very active member of Winnipeg’s O. Koshetz Choir. She held various executive positions in the organization, participated in the Choir’s tours of Ukraine, Europe and South America between 1978 and 1993, and with Fred, hosted many prominent Ukrainian-Canadian and visiting Ukrainian conductors, composers and singers, in the family home.

Fred (Frederick Theodore) Kuzyk and Kay (Catherine; nee Sawchuk) Kuzyk were married for 66 years. They were an upwardly mobile, Ukrainian-Canadian couple who raised 6 children and were active in many of Winnipeg’s Ukrainian-Canadian organizations and institutions.
