Biographical history
Kenneth James Hughes was born in 1932 in England. He was an artist, scholar, author, and professor of English at St. John's College, University of Manitoba. His books include "Signs of Literature: Language, Ideology and the Literary Text", biographies of Canadian artists Jackson Beardy and Kelly Clark, as well as work on Manitoba writers and artists, including Tony Tascona. Hughes died July 23, 2013 in Winnipeg at the age of 80.
Custodial history
The fonds was donated by Kenneth J. Hughes in 1981. The McCleary Drope manuscript was initially placed in a separate fonds entitled McCleary Drope fonds (MSS SC 74). Due to its provenance it was added to the Kenneth J. Hughes fonds (MSS SC 76) in February 2002. However, it can still be found under its old location number, MSS SC 74.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of a biographical scrapbook of Manitoba artist Tony Tascona, a photocopy of an unpublished compilation on the life of Tony Tascona, Tascona In Context: A Documentary History and Source Book by Kenneth James Hughes (Winnipeg: 1981), and an unpublished literary manuscript entitled McCleary Drope. The Tascona scrapbook includes copies of numerous newspaper clippings about Tascona, as well as copies of Tascona's personal documents such as sketches, correspondence, military service records, etc.
