Gordon Ritchie Fonds

  • MSS 035 (A1980-011)
  • Fonds
  • 1968-1970

The Ritchie Collection consists entirely of the office files he generated as a Member of Parliament from 1968-1979. It does not contain any of his medical papers, files on his patients, or any other documents not directly related to his political career.

Unlike many other Members of Parliament collections, Ritchie’s has a very complete run of his speeches and parliamentary reports through the years which, more than any other records, provide a strong sense of his politics, views and philosophies. His constituency files provide the researcher with a fairly good prospective on the attitudes and concerns of western Manitobans throughout these years.

Margaret Konantz fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 1
  • Fonds
  • 1828-1967, predominant 1922-1967

The Konantz collection consists of diaries, correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs and household records. Seven small diaries were kept sporadically from 1944 to 1961. One diary contains descriptions of her trip to England during the war in 1944; two others concern her South American trip in 1955; another diary is undated with personal jottings; one includes notes from her Civil Defense Course in Britain in 1956; another concerns the period spent in England with the Women's Voluntary Service in 1956. The seventh pertains to her trip to the United Arab Republic (Egypt) in 1966. None of the diaries contains large amounts of information or personal reflections; the 1944 war-time diary is the most nearly complete.

The correspondence is limited with regard to her political life and her work with the United Nations. The outgoing correspondence is mostly directed to her family and friends. The incoming correspondence, mainly originating from her associates at the UN, contains comments and inquiries about her travels abroad. Many letters and cards express sympathy to her at the time of her mother's death, and, later, to her family at the time of her own death in 1967.

The collection contains only six of her speeches, four of which are in draft form. Several groups of notes which she later incorporated into her speeches are included. There is a large and diverse collection of memoranda, newsletters and reports from the Women's Volunteer Service, UNICEF, etc. There are several UN reports on various international topics such as apartheid, troubles in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and the Nobel Peace Prize.

Most of the newspaper clippings concern her mother, Mrs. Edith Rogers. The remainder deal with her life, marriage, volunteer work, election campaigns, and her work for UNICEF. Some other clippings pertain to her personal war efforts and her work with the UN.
The financial records are incomplete. Included are a list of charitable donations and receipts, documents pertaining to a Trust Fund set up by her father, a copy of her will, and an assortment of receipts and bills from her trips abroad.

The five scrapbooks range in date of origin from 1922 to 1961. The first deals with her early life and contains wedding announcements and other notices. Three others contain her Women's Volunteer Service clippings and her 1944 trip to England, assorted memorabilia such as a picture drawn by her son, her mother's wedding invitation and clippings, her 1963 political campaign and victory in Winnipeg South. The last contains clippings and articles of her years with the UN.

James and Ljotun Young fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 231
  • Fonds
  • ca. 1948-1963

The fonds consists of 25 spirit cards, which document seven spirit greetings. The cards were created using colour crayons on 4" x 6" card stock. The reverse of one card is dated July 4, 1962 and indicates that it was received at the Spiritualist Camp known as Camp Chesterfield in Indiana. Based upon comments within the text of the greetings, in which it is expressed that the recipient, Ljotun Young, would hopefully "come down here," but understanding that she was not able to "leave the cat," it is probable that the whole series of cards was received at Camp Chesterfield, Indiana, over a period of years (ca. 1958-1964).

Walter Meyer zu Erpen, President of the Survival Research Institute of Canada, confirms this theory and affirms the authentication of the cards by stating, "James and Ljotun Young are known to have travelled together to Camp Chesterfield during the 1950s, though it is doubtful that Ljotun would have gone to Camps Chesterfield after her husband's death. The spirit greetings reveal that on at least one occassion, Winnipeg Spiritualist Hannah Mary Macpherson (1888-1971) acted as intermediary in requesting a reading on behalf of Mrs. Ljotun Young. The daughter of Mrs. Macpherson confirmed that her mother visited Camp Chesterfield nearly every year. Mrs. Macpherson would have known the Youngs through one or more of Winnipeg's spiritual churches. Based upon the case given to preserve the cards, it is clear that they considered these greeting cards to be genuine evidence of spirit communications."

The process of creating spirit cards is thought to be that a spirit precipates the cloth onto the card without any physical, mechanical writing. The spirit greetings on some cards appear to have been drawn inspirationally through the hand of the medium. At times, these have been created at great speed and possibly in darkness.
