  • Fonds
  • 1884-1973

The Spencer collection consists of diaries, account books, photographs and ephemera depicting rural life near Russell, Manitoba. Percy Spencer wrote journal entries for thirty-five years, and his daughter Lucy kept a diary from 1920 - 1926, 1944, and from 1946 - 1959 and 1961 - 1973. The collection contains sixty bound volumes (diaries) and five farm account books. The photographs are interesting in that they depict rural life, but the accompanying documentation is fragmentary thus reducing the overall usefulness of the photos.

NeWest Press fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 117 (A1990-016, A1993-068)
  • Fonds
  • 1975-1993

The papers of NeWest Press document the activities of a small regional press that has concentrated on producing quality works of literary fiction, poetry and drama as well as non-fiction works on a wide variety of topics.

The collection is arranged in eleven series. The first five series contain administrative and business records and correspondence of NeWest Press. Series six and seven are devoted to two related organizations, the NeWest Review and the NeWest Institute.

The eighth, and largest, series is made up of manuscripts and related files that document the publishing output of NeWest from its inception in 1977 to the early 1990s. The records relating to specific books are organized alphabetically by author or, in the case of an anthology, by title. Most, but not all, of the books published by NeWest are represented by some sort of documentation, ranging from manuscripts and corrected drafts to correspondence and promotional files.

The ninth series contains files regarding proposed book projects that were not completed by NeWest. The tenth series contains unsolicited manuscript proposals and their accompanying rejection letters.

The final series consists of electronic records, including manuscripts, office file backups and systems disks. Since the Archives lacks the technological resources to access all of these records, they have only been partially processed.

John Zubek fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 85 (A1992-022, A1995-023)
  • Fonds
  • 1952-1974

The Zubek Collection arrived at the Department of Archives and Special Collections in sixteen boxes. Roughly half of the material consisted of raw data results from various psychological tests Profesor Zubek administered to candidates in the sensory deprivation program. While significant to Dr. Zubek and his colleagues during their tests, this material held little archival significance. Of far more permanent value are his notes, rough copies and correspondence with many editors of learned journals in which he published. There is considerable correspondence between Zubek and the many funding bodies that he approached for capital. The collection is also rich in correspondence and related materials from other scholars, associations, and organizations like NATO that funded his research. Press clippings, both laudatory and highly critical of Zubek's research, have been maintained as have his books and correspondence commenting on papers that he presented at international conferences. While in short supply, there are photographs documenting sensory deprivation experiments.

Charles Ernest L'Ami fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 25
  • Fonds
  • 1930-1980

The fonds consists of correspondence dealing with Charles L'Ami's literary work, career development and political views, literary manuscripts, short stories, dramas and poems, articles, radio scripts, letters to editors, and various resource materials such as reviews, scrapbooks and news clippings.

The Charles Ernest L'Ami collection consists of the following: correspondence dealing mainly with his literary work, career development, and personal opinions and political views; literary manuscripts to his published and unpublished novels, short stories, dramas, and poems; articles; radio scripts; letters to editors; and various resource materials such as reviews, scrapbooks, news clippings, etc.

The collection is fairly complete and representative of L'Ami the writer. Several strictly personal letters were withdrawn from the collection while being processed and returned to the surviving son, Charles A. L'Ami. Nothing was returned or destroyed that reflected L'Ami's philosophy, interpretations, or literary endeavors.

As a local writer of only modest fame, L'Ami never established a national reputation. He was, at heart, a journalist and freelance writer, an interesting blend of the old world and the Canadian prairie with pronounced conservative and traditional leanings and viewpoints. His one major success, The Green Madonna, is not well-known today and little remembered. It may well be that the collection of unpublished works and translations possess future promise for students of Canadian literature.
