  • Fonds
  • 1956-1959

Records consist of correspondence between Dr. Kenneth Standing and Dr. B.G. Whitmore, dating from 1956 to 1959, regarding the construction of the University's cyclotron. Construction of the cyclotron began 1959 and was completed in in October 1964. The original four sector, spiral-ridge cyclotron was designed primarily to accelerate H ions with a provision to accelerate D ions. The cyclotron originally operated with an internal ion source, which was subsequently replaced with an axial injection system in 1976. The cyclotron was decommissioned in the late 1980s.

There are 3 letters that do not directly relate to the cyclotron, but give some general background. They are dated: November 26, 1956; December 19, 1956; and December 30, 1956.

  • 1912-1981

A1980-017, A1986-047: Contains research material used in writing her book Frederick Philip Grove (1973)*. Includes correspondence, interviews (tapes and typescripts), research notes and news articles. There are also copies of three articles on the Graphic Press plus a paper on "Friedrich Hebbel" delivered to the English Club in Simcoe, Ontario (1932). The fifteen tapes have been transferred to the Tape Collection, TC 2.

The Collection gives a glimpse of the rural Manitoba towns in which Frederick Grove lived and taught. The private interviews, although based on somewhat vague recollections, reflect the communities' attitude and feelings toward Grove, especially those of former students, and show a more personal, intimate aspect of Grove's rather unique character and lifestyle.

TC 24 (A1980-017): The tape collection consists of a description of the original project for linguistic study of the Scotch-Cree dialect called Bungi ; transcriptions of all tapes as made by the Indian History Film Project, and the spectrograms and analysis of Margaret Stobie's dialectal study.

Hamilton Family fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 014
  • Fonds
  • 1919-1986

The fonds is primarily related to Dr. T.G. and Lillian Hamilton's investigations of psychic phenomena spanning the years 1918 to 1945. The subject matter of the records includes rappings, clairvoyance, trance states and trance charts, telekinesis, wax molds, bell-ringing, trance scripts and visions, as well as teleplasmic manifestations. The records are in the following various formats: scrapbooks, seance attendance records and registers, affidavits, automatic writings, correspondence, speeches and lectures, newsclippings, journal articles, books, photographs, glass plate negatives and positives, prints, slides, tapes, manuscripts, and promotional materials related to major publications. All positive prints taken from the photographic negatives have been retained with the written records of the experiments which they illustrate. Almost all the glass plate negatives were photographed for archival purposes, and the black and white glossy print collection is also available. A library of related books and journals which accompanied the collection has been separately catalogued and is available. An acession from 2012, donated by Margaret Hamilton Bach's Daughter, Dorothy Reynolds Bach, contains a photo of Lillian May Hamilton, ca. late 1940s, several photographs taken in the 1930s that ended up in the book "Intention and Survival", and various reviews of that book and "Is Survival a Fact?" Also included is Lillian May Hamilton's personal copy of "Intention and Survival".

Hamilton, T. Glen (Thomas Glendenning)

Hamilton Family accrual

Although more than ninety percent of the collection is related to Dr. T.G. Hamilton's investigations of psychic phenomena, the collection is of interest not only to the psychic researcher. Anyone interested in social characteristics of Winnipeg during the Post-World War I and Depression periods will find these records of local historical events a rich resource.

Medical and political historians may also find these records worth investigation. They cover the period from 1915 to 1935, an important period of medical discovery and of social legislation in Manitoba. The materials documenting Dr. Hamilton's medical and political careers complement the records of the Winnipeg General Hospital held by the Provincial Archives of Manitoba and the Legislative Scrapbooks of the Manitoba Legislative Building.

The records relating to psychic experimentation span the years 1918 to 1945. The highly-controlled experiments conducted by the Hamilton Group are important in that they form a solid bridge between late nineteenth and early twentieth century research and the developments of the last twenty-five years.

The subject matter of the records includes "rappings", clairvoyance, trance states and trance charts, telekinesis, wax molds, bell-ringing, trance scripts and visions, as well as teleplasmic manifestations.

The records are in various formats--scrapbooks, seance attendance records and registers, affidavits, automatic writings, correspondence, speeches and lectures, newspaper clippings, journal articles, books, photographic records, glass plate negatives and positives, prints, slides, tapes, manuscripts and promotional materials related to major publications. The records have been arranged chronologically in order to show the progressive development of the group, the mediums and Dr. Hamilton's relationships with persons of similar interests.

These personal contacts are worthy of special note. People of all walks of life and from all levels of intellectual attainment are represented. The mementos and correspondence include the signatures of such international figures as Alexander Fleming, Sir Oliver Lodge, Lady Arthur Conan Doyle, The Rt. Hon. William Lyon Mackenzie King, Theodore Besterman, Nandor Fodor, Dr. Bruce Chown and Dr. R.G. Crandon.

All loose photographic media have been cross-referenced numerically according to the experiment they represent. These photos are held as PC 12. The photographs are entirely concerned with seances, experiments, teleplasms, levitations and other related activities and were taken by a battery of cameras specially placed and triggered for use during the various seances conducted in the Hamilton home at 185 Henderson Highway in Winnipeg.

Obituary notices are to be found in Alumni Bulletins, journal articles and correspondence.

  • Accession
  • 1940-1978
  • Part of Nan Shipley

The collection includes lecture notes, manuscripts and published articles, radio and television scripts, maps, photographs, newspaper clippings, magazine articles and scrapbooks. In addition, there are three boxes of traditional stories, recorded in the scrapbooks of Alex Grisdale of Scanterbury (Brokenhead reserve) (2 boxes) and transcribed by Nan Shipley (1 box).
The map collection is noteworthy for its maps of the old trails used by Indigenous peoples which crossed the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The photograph collection contains pictures of historic sites throughout Manitoba. It is particularly valuable, however, for its record of old and new, urban and rural transportation in Manitoba (e.g. Red River carts, streetcars, railways, steamships, dog sleds and air transport). It provides a pictorial record of hydro developments in northern Manitoba and of the growth and demise of northern towns and settlements. Major and cottage industries, wildlife, flora and fauna of Manitoba are included. Among the portraits are Indigenous peoples, early missionaries and settlers and contemporary civic minded individuals. The research materials are on miscellaneous topics paralleling those of the picture collection.
