  • MSS 28 (A1979-058, A1985-042)
  • Fonds
  • 1963-1970

The 1967 Pan American Society collection contains a remarkably complete record of the administrative working papers of the Society from 1963 to 1970. These are primarily the legal, financial, and committee papers preparatory to the actual start of the Games in July 1967. It is an excellent administrative record of the minutes, correspondence, legal agreements and contracts respecting facilities, staffing, publicity, and funding for staging the Games. A very few post-games papers reflect on the Society and its eventual dissolution in 1970.

Not included here are records of the games themselves, i.e. the day-by-day chronicle and description of athletic performances. However, the motion pictures include two detailed commentaries on film of the Collection. Furthermore there is a valuable oral tape recording about the Games by Bob Picken.

Charles Ernest L'Ami fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 25
  • Fonds
  • 1930-1980

The fonds consists of correspondence dealing with Charles L'Ami's literary work, career development and political views, literary manuscripts, short stories, dramas and poems, articles, radio scripts, letters to editors, and various resource materials such as reviews, scrapbooks and news clippings.

The Charles Ernest L'Ami collection consists of the following: correspondence dealing mainly with his literary work, career development, and personal opinions and political views; literary manuscripts to his published and unpublished novels, short stories, dramas, and poems; articles; radio scripts; letters to editors; and various resource materials such as reviews, scrapbooks, news clippings, etc.

The collection is fairly complete and representative of L'Ami the writer. Several strictly personal letters were withdrawn from the collection while being processed and returned to the surviving son, Charles A. L'Ami. Nothing was returned or destroyed that reflected L'Ami's philosophy, interpretations, or literary endeavors.

As a local writer of only modest fame, L'Ami never established a national reputation. He was, at heart, a journalist and freelance writer, an interesting blend of the old world and the Canadian prairie with pronounced conservative and traditional leanings and viewpoints. His one major success, The Green Madonna, is not well-known today and little remembered. It may well be that the collection of unpublished works and translations possess future promise for students of Canadian literature.

Margaret Konantz fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 1
  • Fonds
  • 1828-1967, predominant 1922-1967

The Konantz collection consists of diaries, correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs and household records. Seven small diaries were kept sporadically from 1944 to 1961. One diary contains descriptions of her trip to England during the war in 1944; two others concern her South American trip in 1955; another diary is undated with personal jottings; one includes notes from her Civil Defense Course in Britain in 1956; another concerns the period spent in England with the Women's Voluntary Service in 1956. The seventh pertains to her trip to the United Arab Republic (Egypt) in 1966. None of the diaries contains large amounts of information or personal reflections; the 1944 war-time diary is the most nearly complete.

The correspondence is limited with regard to her political life and her work with the United Nations. The outgoing correspondence is mostly directed to her family and friends. The incoming correspondence, mainly originating from her associates at the UN, contains comments and inquiries about her travels abroad. Many letters and cards express sympathy to her at the time of her mother's death, and, later, to her family at the time of her own death in 1967.

The collection contains only six of her speeches, four of which are in draft form. Several groups of notes which she later incorporated into her speeches are included. There is a large and diverse collection of memoranda, newsletters and reports from the Women's Volunteer Service, UNICEF, etc. There are several UN reports on various international topics such as apartheid, troubles in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and the Nobel Peace Prize.

Most of the newspaper clippings concern her mother, Mrs. Edith Rogers. The remainder deal with her life, marriage, volunteer work, election campaigns, and her work for UNICEF. Some other clippings pertain to her personal war efforts and her work with the UN.
The financial records are incomplete. Included are a list of charitable donations and receipts, documents pertaining to a Trust Fund set up by her father, a copy of her will, and an assortment of receipts and bills from her trips abroad.

The five scrapbooks range in date of origin from 1922 to 1961. The first deals with her early life and contains wedding announcements and other notices. Three others contain her Women's Volunteer Service clippings and her 1944 trip to England, assorted memorabilia such as a picture drawn by her son, her mother's wedding invitation and clippings, her 1963 political campaign and victory in Winnipeg South. The last contains clippings and articles of her years with the UN.

John M. King fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 063
  • Fonds
  • 1822-1900

The fonds contains over 1,000 handwritten, 19th century letters from family members and friends, a selection of an equally large number of his original sermons, a large selection of his biblical commentaries and lecture notes, a few photographs, and a fewer number of materials on the early development of Manitoba College.

Each of the 1,435 handwritten letters was written in the nineteenth century, dating from an 1822 letter from Rev. King's father to an older son, to a letter dated 1900 written shortly after King's death in 1899. Of these, 431 of the letters are in King's own hand, mostly written to his wife and family between 1874 and 1886. The rest are from family members and a large number of friends and professional acquaintances including a score of fellow Presbyterian ministers from Scotland, the United States and eastern Canada, including a number of the leading theologians of the day (such as Henry Calderwood, William Craven, William Kerr, James Parlane, and others), and leaders in the Winnipeg community of the early 1880s and 1890s who worked with King in developing Manitoba College (George Bryce and Daniel W. Gordon). His family correspondence includes letters not only from wife and children but also from his son-in-law, Charles William Gordon (Ralph Connor).

In conjunction with King's sermons and lectures, the papers provide a good primary resource to understand the theological currents of the times, for example, Biblical criticism, the rising social gospel, and liberal theology. The letters contain descriptions of early Winnipeg and Western Canada as King took up his calling in Manitoba in 1883. The letters also include descriptions of his travels throughout Canada and the United States and discuss matters such as the U.S. Civil War, Canadian elections, and small town life.

The fonds also includes over one thousand handwritten sermons preached between 1865 and 1889. Professor Gordon Harland, a retired professor of Religion here at the University of Manitoba, transcribed several of King's most often-delivered sermons.

A small photograph collection (PC 82), mainly of family and students, is also included.

King, John M.

Alexander Imich fonds

  • CA UMASC MSS 389
  • Fonds
  • [1932?]-2012

The fonds consists of twelve series. The first, biographical, consists of miscellaneous personal papers that Imich has collected over the years, papers and writings of his wife, Wela, and personal journals dating back to 1946. In addition to this, the series contains articles written about Imich, some concerning his role as parapsychologist, others concerning his longevity. The next series, writings, consists of Imich's written articles and publications and all the material related to them including correspondence and abstracts. The writings range in date primarily from 1985-2002, but with some earlier pieces from 1958 and the early 1930s. The chief work in this collection is Incredible Tales of the Paranormal, a compilation of essays edited by Imich. The series contains various copies of the essays in this compendium, even though they were not written by Imich, as it showcases the editing process.

The third series consists of various essay contests that Imich judged between 1992 and 1995, sponsored by various parapsychological organizations. The fourth series, collected typescripts and articles, consist of articles and typescripts that Imich had collected over the years, including works by Rhea White and Larissa Vilenskaya. The fifth series is a group of subject files which vary from astrology to lost treasure buried in Haiti. The sixth series, lectures and conferences, consists of information relating to the various conferences Imich has attended in his life, primarily in the early and mid-1990s, but some as far back as 1970 and 1949. The seventh series, organization publications, consists of a large collection of journals and magazines by various parapsychology organizations between 1958 and 2009. The series contains the publications themselves along with any material Imich had grouped with them, be it correspondence, notes or otherwise.

The eighth series, correspondence, consists of the many letters and emails which Imich has kept from 1949-2011. The correspondence are primarily between Imich and his contemporaries in the world of parapsychology, many of whom are also personal friends. Imich filed his correspondence using three different methods. The first method organizes the correspondence by name, each file correlating to a specific person or organization. This method was primarily used for robust and lengthy correspondence. The second method again organizes by name, but each file corresponds to a letter of the alphabet rather than a specific person; thus all A’s are grouped together in one file, as are all B’s, etc. These are primarily smaller correspondence. Finally, the third method of correspondence filing is by subject. In this category, related correspondence were bound in binders and each binder was assigned a title. The majority of these correspondence are from the 1980s or earlier. Though many binders required two or more file folders to contain their contents, they are treated intellectually as a single file.

The ninth series contains various records from the IM School of Healing Arts in New York, which Imich attended from 1997-1999. The tenth series contains books which Imich has collected from 1937 to 1995, many of which have inscriptions. The eleventh series contains various pieces of silverware which were bent by Joe A. Nuzum. Finally, the 13th series contains various VHS tapes that Imich had collected, consisting primarily of demonstrations and experiments by Joe A. Nuzum and taped copies of the television show "The Otherside".
