David Turnbull fonds

A2004-115 consists of four series and a photographic collection. The series includes correspondence, biographical and a scrapbook and subject files. The majority of the fonds consists of letters written by David Turnbull to his mother, which have been collected in the form of a journal. In addition, two photo albums consisting of 772 black and white photographs take up a large part of the collection. This fonds deals primarily with David Turnbull’s experience as a Rhodes Scholar from 1928 to 1931.

The second accession (A2004-116) contains biographical information, correspondence, photographs, and two Spengler Cup medals from 1929 and 1930.

The collection consists of greeting cards, postcards, photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, farm ledgers and account books, receipts, wills, legal documents, land deeds, historical municipality charts, family trees, and historical papers including official notice of John Thomas’ discharge from the U.S. military service in 1865, a letter from Buckingham palace wishing a safe return to a soldier sent overseas (presumably Pte. H. W. Davison). Included among the family photographs are Pte. Davison’s photos of the destruction in France at the end of WWI. The majority of correspondence is between Llewie Davison, Lizzie Davison, Nita Strange, Mary Davison, Bill Davison, Bert Davison, Edith Thompson, and Theo Stancel Strange.

David Arnason fonds

A portion of the fonds (MSS SC 171) consists of Arnason's Ph.D. thesis titled, The Development of the Prairie Realism: Robert J.C. Stead, Douglas Durkin, Martha Ostenso and Frederick Philip Grove (1980). Included are four copies of a transcript of Arnason's interview with author Martha Ostenso's younger brother, Barry Ostenso, who was 84 years old at the time. It was conducted in Brainerd, Minnesota on August 16, 1977. One transcript includes additional notes by Arnason on the interview. The fonds also consists of photocopies of newspaper clippings pertaining to Douglas Durkin and Martha Ostenso during the Second World War and between 1960 and 1969. The fonds includes maps of the rural area west of Lake Manitoba, Oeland and Gare Farm. Photocopies of photographs of actors acting out scenes included in Ostenso's book Wild Geese (1926) and a copy of Ostenso's story The Storm from The American-Scandinavian Review are included. Letters regarding the transfer of Martha Ostenso's papers to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections from 1991-1993 are also included.

The textual material in the fonds pertains to J.B. Rudnyc'kyj's personal and professional life. This material includes correspondence, notes, receipts, minutes,agendas, programs, publications, maps, papers, essays, exams, galley proofs, drafts, financial ledgers, index cards, and posters primarily relating to Rudnyc'kyj's career as an educator, academic scholar, and author in the fields of linguistics and onomastics, as well as his organizational affiliations and his personal life. The microfilm collection consists of thirty-five reels of J.B. Rudnyc'kyj's library and other literary works. The photograph collection contains twenty-six photographs, primarily including photographic reprints of literary works. The fonds also includes one audio-cassette of a Radio-Canada International Ukrainian language broadcast in which J.B. Rudnyc'kyj discusses his involvement in the Bilingual/Bicultural Commission.

Girling Family fonds

The Girling Family fonds contains detailed records of the farm’s operation from the time of purchase in 1915 until its sale in 1977, as well as personal documents belonging to Raymond Girling. The fonds consists of: ledgers of the family’s financial transactions, including grain sales, livestock dealings, farm labour payments and farm maintenance and operating expenses; several years of tax returns; wheat producer’s certificates; various other documents relating to the operation of the farm; school assignments and certificates; high school exams; college notes and certificates; and bond certificates. There is also a Farmer’s Manual from 1895, in which Joseph Girling kept seeding and plowing notes from 1903-1977, and a booklet from 1940 entitled “How I Farm” that contains essays and farming tips provided by Manitoba farmers, including Raymond Girling.

This fonds consists of records relating to the academic and artistic career of Professor Victor S. Cowie. Materials include personal and business related correspondence, research and lecture notes, and a variety of research-based newspaper clippings. Handwritten and photocopied drafts of the musicals The Magic Trumpet, Reginald the Robot, and The Curse of Ponsonby Hall are also included. In addition, the fonds also includes drafts and documents related to the film And No Birds Sing, as well as playbills, newspaper reviews and other documents related to theatre productions in which Cowie was involved. Also included are 18 photographs related to University of Manitoba theatre activities. The fonds also contains 10 atlas maps of Manitoba and western Canada and colour illustrations titled "The Funeral of Two Members of the 90th Battalion at Winnipeg" and "€Scenes from An Emigrant'€s Life in Manitoba."€ 39 black and white photographs mainly related to engineering activities are also included in the fonds. Winnipeg Boys'€ Choir concert programs, T. Eaton Co. Anniversary ribbons, a University of Manitoba Engineers'€ felt banner, and University of Manitoba felt patches are also included.

This fonds consists of records related mainly to the academic research and writings of Jeffrey Cook. Records include correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, research notes and draft writings. Areas of research include, Hungarian and Eastern European organic architecture (including research on Imre Makovecz), and research on Frank Lloyd Wright and the FLW School of Architecture. Also included is a set of The Brochure Series of Architectural Illustration from 1899-1901 and a facsimile edition of William Blake’s Songs of Innocence. Rare book lists and purchase receipts are also included.

The 1997 accession is divided into 10 series. They include: biographical material, Swinton's writings, academic correspondence and papers, gallery correspondence, documents pertaining to Swinton's book, Scultpure of the Inuit, documents related to art exhibitions, documents related to Inuit art, documents related to Canadian art (as opposed to dealing exclusively with Inuit art), and research materials.

The 2005 accession is separated into 13 series. They include biographical information, correspondence with publishers, correspondence, manuscripts and drafts, articles and speeches, reviews and brochures of Swinton's work, miscellaneous, sketches, map cabinet material, tape collection, photographs, slides, and negatives. The 2007 accession consists of video and audio recordings. The photograph collection consists of 2690 photographs, 52 proof sheets, 2630 slides, 2312 negatives, and 4 videocassettes. Also included in the fonds are 1321 sketches. The tape collection consists of 20 audio recordings. The electronic records collection consists of 4 computer diskettes.

The 2005-2010 accessions of the fonds are divided into eleven series: curriculum vitae, published articles, notes and correspondence for the translation of Rare and Commonplace Flowers, correspondence regarding Uncommon Wealth, correspondence and contributors' submissions to the Carol Shields issue of Prairie Fire and to Carol Shields: The Arts of a Writing Life, reading scripts for unpublished lectures and addresses, an unpublished short story and unpublished novel, a file marked "miscellaneous" by donor that contains cards, certificates, poems and some correspondence, letters to donor from writers and critics, two colour photographs, and copies of books written or edited by the donor.

The 2014 accession (A14-71) is divided into nine series consisting of clippings, correspondence, speeches, professional writing, published works and photographs.

The 2005 accession consists of Michael Kinnear's study titled Liberal Seceders, his research material, and Manitoba, Saskatchewan poll maps from Federal, Civic and Provincial Elections.

The 2007 accession consists of eight series. They include British Liberal seceders research material, Kinnear's notes on Liberal seceders, Kinnear's notes while a student at Oxford, research material, Kinnear articles, pamphlets, maps of the United States, election buttons, and banners.

The 2009 accession consists of three series. They include Manitoba election material, electronic records (EL 19), and maps (MC 27).

In total, the map collection consists of 19 maps, the electronic records collection consists of 29 3.5" computer diskettes, and the microform collection (MF 28) consists of 3 reels of microfilm.

The 2015 accession has two series that include research notes and appendices for Kinnear's published and unpublished work.

The fonds consists of photocopies of rare manuscripts, dictionaries, grammars, vocabularies, and other studies dealing with several North American Aboriginal languages, including the following: Algonquin, Cree, Chipewyan, Saulteaux, Ojibwa, Assiniboine, Dakota, Siksika, and Blackfoot. Also included in the fonds are materials on Catherine Tegakouita (1656-1680) and on the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The eleven rare books listed in the register have been catalogued independently.

The 2005 accession is compiled into five series. The first series is comprised of biographical information, including Condie's curriculum vitae. The second series contains Condie's personal and professional correspondence. The third series is divided into six sub-series consisting of individual films: Oh, Sure (1972), Getting Started (1979), Pigbird (1982), The Big Snit (1985), The Apprentice (1991), and La Salla (1996). The material within these sub-series includes award notifications, film industry and newspaper reviews, exhibition programs, animation cels, backgrounds, layouts, and dope sheets, as well as publication and periodical information pertaining to Condie's career in animation. Scans of photographs make up the fourth series. A videocassette (VHS) of a compilation of Condie's work for the National Film Board of Canada concludes the series.

The 2006 accession consists of approximately 100 painted cels from the film The Big Snit as well as two backgrounds created by Richard Condie's sister, Sharon Condie, for the same film. The 2011 accession consists of painted cels from the films Heartland and the Big Snit, as well as two videocassettes of Heartland and The Apprentice. The fonds is compiled into two series, the first entitled Animation Cels: Painted Cels and the second PC 196. The 2018 accessions A.18-086 and A.18-087 consist of cels from The Big Snit and accession A.18-100 has textual records of promotional material, clippings and publications relating to Richard Condie.

The 2005 accession consists of biographical information, correspondence, research material from the Vatican, Viennese, Czech, and Hungarian Archives (photocopies), research material on Carpatho-Ukraine (Subcarpathia) region, material on his courses at the University of Manitoba, and UVAN (Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences) documentation. The tape collection consists of 8 audio-cassettes featuring recordings of Andrej Sakharov's visit to Winnipeg on February 17, 1989, audio recordings of Ukrainian-Canadian Conferences and Ukrainian visitors to Winnipeg. The 2008 accession consists of Reverend Baran's identification documents, education documents, travel documents, material on his awards and honors, his father's (Viktor Baran) diary, and a photograph collection consisting of 208 photographs depicting his childhood and 50 years of priesthood. Also included is a CD containing digital reproductions of items in the fonds.

The fonds is compiled into two series; whenever possible the material is arranged chronologically. The first series is comprised of trial backgrounds created for the animated shorts “The Big Snit” (1985) and “Getting Started” (1979). The second series contains two film reels: the animated short “John Law and the Mississippi Bubble” [9 min. 40 sec.] released in 1978, and the animated short “The Big Snit” [10 min. 41 sec.] released in 1985.

The fonds consists of two series: textual records and photographs. The textual records series is comprised of two letters mounted on cardboard and signed by Dwight D. Eisenhower as Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Force, photocopies of two maps of England and Germany, a four-part typewritten memoir of the donor's war-time experiences, and a partial list providing captions for the photographic series. The photographic series is comprised of 39 monochrome photographs (each 16.5 x 23 cm) taken and printed by the donor. Each photograph is mounted on 29 x 36 cm card-stock on which brief captions have been written in pencil.

This first installment consists of 2.5 meters W) in twenty-one (21) storage boxes. The collection consists of working files of the Manitoba branch of the Consumers' Association of the Winnipeg Branch and of the Fort Garry Branch. Highlighting the collection are executive meeting minutes from 1947-79, correspondence, membership lists, annual reports, financial records, and annual meetings. Besides operation files, many special investigations of consumer concerns are documented including studies of food prices, fishing, drug costs, loan charges, consumer credit, and a wide range of other matters. Scattered throughout is much material on the national association, its concerns, and activities.
