Cliff Eyland fonds

A2014-137 covers the life, work, and art of Cliff Eyland. It consists of Eyland's working files, sketchbooks, art projects, and materials collected form other artists and creators. The materials span from 1966 to 2014, and include 240 slides, hundreds of photographs, and thousands of individual drawings and other art pieces. There are also electronic records, mainly comprised of digital images of artwork, audio recordings, and video recordings.

A2018-145 spans over six decades, from the 1960s until 2015, containing the life, work and art of Winnipeg-based artist, professor and curator Cliff Eyland. The fonds has been divided into 10 series and is largely composed of Eyland’s individual drawings and personal art projects, as well as photos and slides of artwork and exhibitions by various artists. Additionally, the collection contains the documentation of Eyland’s personal life, various events, exhibitions and numerous trips.

The collection consists of working files of the Manitoba branch of the Consumers' Association of the Winnipeg Branch and of the Fort Garry Branch. Highlighting the collection are executive meeting minutes from 1947-79, correspondence, membership lists, annual reports, financial records, and annual meetings. Besides operation files, many special investigations of consumer concerns are documented including studies of food prices, fishing, drug costs, loan charges, consumer credit, and a wide range of other matters. Scattered throughout is much material on the national association, its concerns, and activities.

Records consist of correspondence between Dr. Kenneth Standing and Dr. B.G. Whitmore, dating from 1956 to 1959, regarding the construction of the University's cyclotron. Construction of the cyclotron began 1959 and was completed in in October 1964. The original four sector, spiral-ridge cyclotron was designed primarily to accelerate H ions with a provision to accelerate D ions. The cyclotron originally operated with an internal ion source, which was subsequently replaced with an axial injection system in 1976. The cyclotron was decommissioned in the late 1980s.

There are 3 letters that do not directly relate to the cyclotron, but give some general background. They are dated: November 26, 1956; December 19, 1956; and December 30, 1956.

David Arnason and Wayne Tefs fonds

The fonds consists of 45 one-hour audiotaped interviews of several well-known Canadian writers. Professor David Arnason and Wayne Tefs conducted these interviews between 1975 and 1977 for the radio program Canadian Writers Symposium. Many of the interviews are distinctly biographical in nature and revealing of the life and creativity of the individual writers. A few of the interviews have been transcribed. Included are interviews of Milton Acorn, George Bowering, Paul Hiebert, Pat Lane, Daphne Marlott, W.O. Mitchell, P.K. Page, Al Purdy, William Valgardson, Adele Wiseman, and many more.

David Arnason fonds

A portion of the fonds (MSS SC 171) consists of Arnason's Ph.D. thesis titled, The Development of the Prairie Realism: Robert J.C. Stead, Douglas Durkin, Martha Ostenso and Frederick Philip Grove (1980). Included are four copies of a transcript of Arnason's interview with author Martha Ostenso's younger brother, Barry Ostenso, who was 84 years old at the time. It was conducted in Brainerd, Minnesota on August 16, 1977. One transcript includes additional notes by Arnason on the interview. The fonds also consists of photocopies of newspaper clippings pertaining to Douglas Durkin and Martha Ostenso during the Second World War and between 1960 and 1969. The fonds includes maps of the rural area west of Lake Manitoba, Oeland and Gare Farm. Photocopies of photographs of actors acting out scenes included in Ostenso's book Wild Geese (1926) and a copy of Ostenso's story The Storm from The American-Scandinavian Review are included. Letters regarding the transfer of Martha Ostenso's papers to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections from 1991-1993 are also included.

The 2012 accession (2012-068) consists of 8 series that include correspondence, manuscripts, indexes, and other materials related to the publication of works and anthologies edited by David Kent, including Lighting up the Terrain: The Poetry of Margaret Avison, Hugh Anson-Cartwright, Bookseller: A Celebration, and Christian Poetry in Canada. The accession also consists of correspondence with writers and poets, including Douglas Lochhead, Robert Finch, Richard Outram, and George Johnston, relating to their contributions to anthologies edited by David Kent, and the St. Thomas Poetry Series. Finally, the fonds includes a series of electronic records related to the material in the collection.

The second accession (2015-076) consists of 6 series. The series are based upon correspondence and other material related to books edited and co-edited by David Kent, including the books Romantic Parodies and Regency Radical, the St. Thomas Poetry Series, a memoir by Sister Constance Murphy, the books The Achievement of Christina Rossetti and Selected Prose of Christina Rossetti, and correspondence with Nicholas Rossetti.

A2014-129 consists of Prof. Punter’s correspondence while employed by the federal Department of Tourism & Rural Development (1964-69) and by the University of Manitoba (1969-2013). It also includes the correspondence of the Botany Department’s Community Service Extension program (1968-2005); materials concerning Prof Punter’s involvement in several University of Manitoba councils and committees (1968-2012); materials concerning the research of several graduate students (1978-1990s); as well as a few clippings, articles, reports and bulletins.

David Rabinovitch fonds

The first accession (TC 124, A07-47) contains 19 hours of 36 taped documentaries and interviews of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio shows by David Rabinovitch dating from May 1970 to May 1973. The lengths of each production varies from 15 minute segments to 30 and 60 minute documentary programs. The interviews deal with then-current cultural issues in Canada and the United States ranging from anti-war demonstrations, race relations, drugs, the French community in Manitoba, and many others. In addition to David Rabinovitch’s interviews the fonds also contains CBC archived radio programs from 1927, 1942, 1949 and 1953 on topics such as Canada’s Jubilee, Road to Dominion, Davidson Dunton, and Hear Canada Grow, respectively.

The second accession (MSS 421, A13-110) contains research materials, transcripts, correspondence, photographs, and notes regarding documentaries and other projects Rabinovitch produced. Additionally this accession contains audio reels, U-matic tapes, film reels, Betacam tapes, and VHS tapes relating to projects Rabinovitch wrote, directed, or produced. Notably, there is comprehensive documentation and corresponding film materials for "Hard Times" a documentary series Rabinovitch produced for the CBC.

A2004-115 consists of four series and a photographic collection. The series includes correspondence, biographical and a scrapbook and subject files. The majority of the fonds consists of letters written by David Turnbull to his mother, which have been collected in the form of a journal. In addition, two photo albums consisting of 772 black and white photographs take up a large part of the collection. This fonds deals primarily with David Turnbull’s experience as a Rhodes Scholar from 1928 to 1931.

The second accession (A2004-116) contains biographical information, correspondence, photographs, and two Spengler Cup medals from 1929 and 1930.

The fonds consists of a large agricultural account ledger of a terminal grain elevator near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The ledger includes accounts of warehouses in Ogilvie, Minnedosa, Burnside, Binscarth, Austin, Gladstone, and McDonald, Manitoba. The ledger also includes accounts with many Winnipeg grain families such as Richardson, Sutherland, Armstrong, Rathburn, Kirkwood, Drysdale, Ashdown, and others.

The 1997 and 2004 accessions consist of 11.2 m of textual records divided into eight series and fifteen sub-series. The eight major series of the fonds are personal information, academic career material, correspondence, research, writings, radio and television work, consulting work, and miscellaneous material. In addition, there are 111 computer diskettes (5 1/4" and 3 1/2" floppies), 359 audio cassettes, 1 reel-to-reel audio tape, 197 video cassettes, 1 film reel, 33 photographs, 13 slides, and 1 negative comprising the photograph, tape, and electronic records collections.

The 2013 accession consists of six series: personal information, correspondence, writings, radio and television, board membership, and miscellaneous interests and research. The first series contains material from the 1950s to 2013, consisting primarily of biographical information about Dian Cohen, various awards that she’s obtained over the years, day planners, and records created by and/or pertaining to members of her family, including her daughter, her ex-husband and his family. The second series contains various correspondence that Cohen has kept from 1958-2004. While some are personal, such as letters from her father, most are related to business or publishing. The third series contains Dian Cohen’s various written works and speeches from 1972-2003. Most of the material in this series relates to the book “Net Results” and to speeches given at various events and conferences. In addition to the writings themselves, this series contains many related records such as reviews. The fourth series contains transcripts and administrative papers relating to Cohen’s various radio and television productions such as “Money, Power and Politics”, as well as proposals for other productions from 1978-2003. The fifth series contains records related to the various businesses and organizations that Cohen was a board member of from 1990-2011 such as Monsanto Canada and the International Institute for Sustainable Development. In the case of Monsanto, in addition to fiduciary records, the sub-series contains research done by Cohen and Guy Stanley which sought to use Monsanto’s business model as a new standard for emulation. Finally, the last series contains various other interests of Cohen from 1958 to 1996 including articles she’s collected and guides to hone her skills as a writer and interviewer.
