The fonds consists of a large agricultural account ledger of a terminal grain elevator near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The ledger includes accounts of warehouses in Ogilvie, Minnedosa, Burnside, Binscarth, Austin, Gladstone, and McDonald, Manitoba. The ledger also includes accounts with many Winnipeg grain families such as Richardson, Sutherland, Armstrong, Rathburn, Kirkwood, Drysdale, Ashdown, and others.

The papers in the collection range from the early part of the 20th century to the 1990s and reflect the rich and varied life of Rev. Canon Laurence Wilmot.

The collection contains over 50 appointment diaries and journals covering the years 1946 to 1992 as well as a collection of Warden's notebooks, correspondence, speeches yearbooks and calendars from Rev. Canon Wilmot's years at St. John's College.

The rest of the papers are organized into series corresponding to Rev. Canon Wilmot's various occupations and activities. The series' includes his personal correspondence and the notes and papers he amassed as a student in a variety of educational institutions. These include notes from his years at St. John's in the late 1920s, notes and assignments from the 1946 fall session at Yale Divinity School, papers and tests from Harvard Summer School in 1960 and various papers and notes from the University of Manitoba's M.A. program in the 1970s.

Materials relating to Rev. Canon Wilmot's time as an army chaplain during World War II make up the second series. The military records, notebooks, letters and other documents included in this series provide a detailed picture of the daily activities and routines of a chaplain attached to a regiment engaged in active combat. Not only is there a terrific collection of letters sent from overseas to his wife in Canada - on a daily basis - but also her replies, as well as transcribed versions of same. Also included in the war correspondence is a collection of letters sent to Wilmot by relatives of the unit's casualties. Also included are several letters written by wives requesting divorces.

One section of the collection contains the papers generated by Rev. Canon Wilmot's clerical duties, including correspondence with church officials, collections of sermons and devotional talks and a few miscellaneous items.

Another series is made up of documents relating to Rev. Canon Wilmot's stint as a field secretary for the Anglican Church's General Board of Religious Education from 1946 to 1949. His correspondence from this period indicates the frustrations he experienced in trying to introduce some much needed innovations in the face of opposition from the head office. Several of the files contain material relating to the Knights of the Cross, the men's lay organization Rev. Canon Wilmot was in the process of getting off the ground before the General Board put a stop to it.

Documents relating to Rev. Canon Wilmot's time as a college administrator and lecturer, both at St. John's College in Winnipeg and at St. Augustine's College in Canterbury, England, are included in the collection. The material on St. John's should be of particular interest since it reflects Rev. Canon Wilmot's difficult relationship with the church hierarchy as well as his impressive accomplishments. His correspondence and activities on behalf of the College extend into the 1990s.

The collection also contains the papers generated by Rev. Canon Wilmot's career as a hospital chaplain in Houston, Washington, D.C. and Whitby, Ontario from 1967 to 1972. All of his patient interview notes, student assignments and correspondence from this period are included.

The "writer and researcher" series consists of documents relating to his 1979 book Whitehead and God and to his writing and research on various aspects of early University of Manitoba history and Manitoba history in general.

The final series includes papers from the various organizations and committees with which he became involved upon his return to Manitoba in 1973. Among them are the Continuing Education Committee of the Diocese of Rupert's Land, the 1980-81 Anglican Task Force on Ministries To and With the Elderly, Creative Retirement Manitoba and the Society of Self-Help, Inc. (SOS). The SOS papers' depiction of a charitable organization destroyed by incompetent (and possibly corrupt) management and childish power struggles is of particular interest.

Included in the photograph collection (PC 132) is a significant number of images dating back to the late 1890s (but mostly onward from the mid-1920s) and many photographs which document Rev. Canon Wilmot's war experiences as a chaplain in Italy and The Netherlands (over 200 photographs and negatives of this period).

The cassette and reel-to-reel tapes are largely from the 1970s and 1980s and include a few personal messages, some family history, some sermons and talks and a sizable number of religious conferences, discussion groups and lecture series. One of the tapes contains a 1968 talk on ethics by the noted American anthropologist Margaret Mead.

On October 1, 1996, John Richthammer, Don Kroeker and Rev. Canon Wilmot worked together at his home to select important, representative photographs depicting Rev. Canon Wilmot's life. Photographs collected span the 1890s to the 1990s.

Additional documentation in the form of manuscripts, degrees and commendations (university, army, community), as well as both original and typewritten correspondence between Rev. Canon Wilmot and his wife Hope during W.W. II, were obtained in order to compliment the Collection.

Complimentary collections located in the Archives & Special Collections include the collection (MSS 56) of Rev. Charles William Gordon (Ralph Connor), a well-known Manitoba minister and highly-successful Canadian novelist, whose collection is one generation earlier than Wilmot's. The collection (MSS 63) of Rev. John Mark King (Gordon's father-in-law) is yet another generation earlier. As well, the St. John's College Collection might be consulted by those wishing to correlate Wilmot's collection to the material in the St. John's Collection.

The first accession: is separated into seven series. The first pertains to Margaret Stobie's research with the Bunji dialect (1965-1969) The second concerns the North Studies Project (1965-1977). William Stobie held a two year term as president of the Winnipeg Little Theatre Co. and Margaret acted, directed and produced plays for the company. The third series related to the theatre company and includes it's merging with Theatre 77 to create the Manitoba Theatre Centre (1950-1982). The fourth series deals with William Stobie's involvement with the University of Manitoba's academic unions (1949-1976). The fifth series relates to William Stobie's committee work while at the University of Manitoba (1948-1975). The sixth series contains information on Professor Harry Crowe's dismissal from United College (1958-1959). Theatre, ballet and concert program make up the final series. (1936-1979).

The second accession: consists primarily of Margaret Stobie’s research and publication drafts along with a photographic collection of Margaret and William Stobie’s early years. The accession consists of a manuscript and photographic collection. The Manuscript collection is divided into six series consisting of Publication Drafts, Correspondence, Research, Biographical, Publications, and Miscellaneous materials. The photographic collection consists of 77 photographs, 4 albums, and 18 photo negatives.

The third accession: This accession consists primarily of William Stobie's academic papers and biographical materials, Margaret Stobie's manuscripts, and personal photographs of William Stobie’s early years. The accession consists of a manuscript and photographic collection. The Manuscript collection is divided into eleven series consisting of Biographical Materials, Correspondence, Academic Writing/Manuscripts - Margaret Stobie, Miscellaneous Writing - William Stobie, Academic Writing - William Stobie, Class Notes - William Stobie, Lecture Notes - William Stobie, Academic Reference Materials, Research Notes - Margaret Stobie, Publications, Oversized Materials, and Photograph & Tape Collections. The photographic collection consists of 206 photographs, and 77 photo negatives. The tape collection consists of one tape.

Travel photography and other material. The fonds are divided into 3 series: Lantern slides (wooden boxes), Lantern slides (cardboard boxes) and Albums. This includes his travels in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Central Asia (?), and the United States.

The fonds consists of an original land patent, dated May 22, 1889, granting Thomas Nevin a quarter section of land (160 acres) in Township 11 of Manitoba. The fonds also contains an excerpt from an unknown book detailing the Nevin family history.

The collection contains the "diaries" (yearly journals), travel books and correspondence (mostly letters received) of L.B. Allen, along with miscellaneous mementos, news clippings, and drafts and copies of her published work. There are also materials about the correspondence of the Allen and Harper families, with drafts and copies of (mostly non-scientific) articles by Frank Allen. With the 1995 accrual, a number of nature and travel slides were added to the photograph collection. The collection also contains corresponding text used by L. B. Allen in slide shows, as well as design lectures.

Boxes 16, 17, and 18, as well as Box 2 of the photograph collection and one slide binder, contain material from the 1995 accrual. Other material from this accrual is integrated into the previously existing collection. Eight tape cassettes were also added.

The bulk of the 1046 items are photographs of Miss Allen, family members, friends and colleagues, of whom many were connected with the University of Manitoba. There are a few photographs of places, and some drawings by Miss Allen and others. The albums also contain some memorabilia and newsclippings. Most items in the albums are identified and dated. There also are a few enlargements of photographs which appeared in her published book, Frost. Most of the 195 slides are a sample of Miss Allen's slide shows, which she presented on numerous occasions throughout the country.

Separated from the collection are numerous family photographs, nature and travel slides (PC 42) and several tape cassettes (TC 28). The slides housed in the photograph collection are a representative sample of what was donated.

The fonds for A1996-094 consists of eight series. They include: biographical information; correspondence; the MacDonald Will Case; Ford Commission; Mackenzie by-election; Winnipeg Committee to Aid Democracy; John Tunney appeal to Supreme Court; and speeches.

The fonds for A1997-069 consists of five series. They include: correspondence; speeches, evidence & briefs; E.J. McMurray material; topics of interest; and material by other people.

The fonds is divided into three series. 40 photographs depict Lake Winnipeg and Northern Manitoba from 1915-1930. The second series of 19 black and white photographs is of the 1950 flood in Winnipeg. The third series is a single photograph of the donor's father teaching school in Greenridge, Manitoba in the 1890s.

The fonds contains a variety of records that relate to student life at the University of Manitoba. The first series of class notes contains several notebooks and loose notes that belonged to Josephine, Evelyn, and Arthur Riley. The notes are arranged alphabetically according to subject. The second series of evaluations includes official Department of Education and University of Manitoba exam questions, written assignments, and grade summaries. The third series of receipts includes receipts for food, medical and dental fees, utilities and household expenses, and miscellaneous materials. The fourth series of published materials contains various publications which are arranged first by type and then, where applicable, by date or author. Series five, entitled other textual records, contains a miscellaneous assortment of items which could not be logically incorporated into the other series. The sixth series of photographs and oversize items contains photographs of various subjects and oversized items.

The fonds consists of one minute book containing the minutes of the Intercollegiate Football Association from October 28, 1892 to October 17, 1905.

The collection contains the following research papers relating to Frederick Philip Grove: articles; a Grove bibliography project; a Grove biography project; books; correspondence; diaries; dissertation abstract; encyclopedia entries; lectures; radio debates; reviews; travel notes; 1892 passenger lists and materials by and about F.P. Greve. The collection does not contain any of Spettigue's own literary material.

The fonds have been separated into 11 series. They include: biographical information; articles and lectures; refereeing books & articles; correspondence; conferences; course outlines; CSIS material; SIRC material; Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP; research material; and videocassettes, CDs and slides.

The fonds consists of one diary detailing William McDonnell's life as a farmer in the former area of Woodlands.

The fonds consists of farm ledgers and accounts books, wheat board certificates, newspaper clippings, military services records, Second World War ration booklets, a land deed, tax returns, correspondence, and historical documents about the Braun family.

The fonds consist of Arnett’s personal and professional papers, correspondence, newspaper clippings and photographs.

The fonds consists largely of correspondence between A. Bowerman, W. A. Burman and H.L. Thompson of The Copp Clarke Co. Ltd. publishing company, and E.A. Blakely of the Manitoba Department of Education about the preparation and publication of a textbook on the flora of Manitoba for use in the public schools of the Province. In addition, there is an undated missive from the Department of Education, Manitoba, titled The Course of Agriculture - For the Public Schools of Manitoba.

The fonds consists of Dafoe's personal and political records, including diaries, correspondence, speeches, editorials, articles, memoranda, reports and news clippings. Included are two unpublished diaries: one written in 1919 while Dafoe attended the Paris Peace Conference, and the other written in 1923 while at the Imperial Conference. Correspondence ranges from 1896 to 1944 and is most complete in the years immediately after the First World War. Dafoe had many correspondents all over the world, most of whom dealt with public affairs, economic and political issues, and international activities. Included in the fonds are sixty-six speeches, mostly of a political nature, and which range in date from 1911 to 1943. There is also a collection of his writings, including his Manitoba Free Press editorials from July to October of 1917, and 25 reports and research compilations on a variety of subjects. Newspaper clippings include reviews of his books and articles. Other miscellaneous material includes the Dafoe family tree, memorials written by friends and peers, and a semi-biographical sketch of Dafoe's early years written by his sister, Mrs E. Emerson. Archives & Special Collections also houses an ancillary collection, in microform format (MF 15), of his printed Manitoba Free Press editorials from 1928 to 1944.

This collection is comprised of newspaper articles, photographs, negatives, letters and other printed materials. In addition to textual materials, the collection includes 1163 photographs and 1 reel to reel audio tape.

The fonds is divided into six series. The first series, Personal, contains biographical information, including a letter diary, as well as records pertaining to her honourary degrees. The second series, Correspondence, is divided into two sub-series. The first contains general correspondence. The second sub-series consists of material related to the 1970 Manitoba Centennial issue of Mosaic.

The third series pertains to the acquisition of the Frederick Philip Grove Collection. It consists of a variety of textual records, including correspondence, research. The fourth series, Papers, Letters and Publications, is divided into two sub-series. The first sub-series consists of papers, lectures and publications written by Professor Saunders while the second sub-series is comprised of writings and publications by other people. The fifth series is comprised of research done by Saunders on a variety of books and authors. The sixth series is Photograph Collection (PC 168). It consists of 2 class photos, one from 1917-1918 and one from 1918-1919.

A1992-030:
At this point the collection's records are largely limited to the theatre seasons from 1973-1974 to 1981-1982. This period includes the eight seasons during which the organization was known as the Manitoba Theatre Workshop and its first season operating as the Prairie Theatre Exchange.

The administrative and production files have been grouped together by season. In certain cases, events that generated a number of files were given their own separate series. These include the 1977 Summer Theatre Project, the 1979 Playwright Search and the 1980 and 1981 Drama Festivals.

The files in the seasonal series document the various activities undertaken by the Manitoba Theatre Workshop, including its theatre classes, educational outreach programmes, school tours, TV productions and the provincial drama festivals. Most of the seasonal series also contain files of press releases and press clippings as well as other promotional material. The many files dealing with grant applications and various aspects of fundraising are evidence of the Workshop's constant struggle to stay afloat financially.
Production files dealing with individual shows are arranged chronologically at the end of each seasonal series. These files contain equity contracts, production and rehearsal schedules, correspondence, programs, promotional material and, in some cases, the script. Most of the major productions produced or hosted by MTW/PTE during its first nine years of existence are represented but the holdings are not exhaustive. For a complete list of productions, the researcher is advised to consult Peter Spencer's 1983 thesis "The History and Contribution of the Manitoba Theatre Workshop/Prairie Theatre Exchange".

Miscellaneous and cumulative files that could not easily be placed into a seasonal series are grouped together near the end. The final series is a collection of scripts representing the productions staged by Prairie Theatre Exchange. The title "script" is somewhat misleading since most of these files also contain programs, rehearsal schedules, production notes, blocking diagrams and other related documents. The scripts themselves are usually extensively annotated.

A2002-034:
The collection includes records of the Prairie Theatre Exchange (known as the Manitoba Theatre Workshop until 1981) encompassing theatre seasons from 1973 to 2001, particularly those of the 1980s and early 1990s. Included are administrative papers, such as minutes, correspondence, legal and financial records, as well as publicity material, newspaper articles, show programs and posters, production scripts, notes, schedules, plans, drawings and set designs. The photograph collection consists of 91 photographs, 3 contact sheets, 1 slide, and 43 negative strips. The tape collection consists of 14 audio tapes. The electronic media series consists of 10 computer diskettes.

These files document the various activities undertaken by PTE/MTW, including its theatre classes, educational outreach programmes and school tours. Most of the seasonal series contain files of Board of Directors minutes, correspondence, finances, press releases and press clippings as well as other promotional material. Production files dealing with the season's shows (mainstage and touring productions) are arranged chronologically at the end of each seasonal series. Records in these files include programs, schedules, promotional material and reviews.

Miscellaneous and cumulative files that could not easily be placed into a seasonal series are grouped together. These include files which continunue over multiple seasons, regarding PTE/MTW buildings, tours and activities, as well as reference materials and a large group of subject-files (accumulated by PTE) regarding the organization's "early history".

The third series consists of records from the prompt books of PTE's Stage Managers (and sometimes Assistant Stage Managers). These contain rehearsal schedules, production notes, blocking diagrams and annotated scripts, show reports, tour itineraries, notes regarding set, costume, sound and lighting cues, as well as other related documents.

The fifth series contains articles, speeches, conference programs & book reviews 1930-2001.The sixth series is radio scripts 1955-1981. The seventh series is Patriotic Observances for Manitoba Department of Education. The eighth series is material from the University of Manitoba from 1945-2001. The ninth series is material relating to education 1915-2002. The tenth series contains research material on Aging & Senior Citizens 1969-1994. The eleventh series is research on women. Series twelve contains information on the Canadian Civil Liberties Association 1993-2002. Research material on Shack's wide ranging areas of interest comprises the thirteen series. Series 14 contains information on Shack's Awards 1969-2002. Series 15 contains biographical information, eulogies & obituaries on Shack's friends 1972-1996. Series 16 contains information on Jewish history, 1950-1996. Series 17 contains information about Shack's adoptive brother John Hirsch 1951-1988. Series 18 contains literary material by other people to sent to Shack 1977-2001. Series nineteen is miscellaneous material 1917-2001. The final series twenty contains oversize material including newspaper clippings, awards, plaques, degrees and a family tree.

The fonds consists of two North-West Territories Public School Leaving Examinations booklets from June 1897 and June 1898. The Department of Education in Medicine Hat was part of the North-West Territories until the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta were created out of the Territories in 1905. Although the first schools in Alberta were founded by Catholic and Protestant missionaries in the mid-nineteenth century, the North-West Territories School Ordinance of 1884 established a dual confessional system of Catholic and Protestant schooling based on the Quebec model. A photocopy of a group photograph including Ms. Ireland and her father, Thomas, owner of the local brewery, is also included.

The University Libraries fonds (UA 9) contains correspondence, reports, surveys, statistics and minutes, with files pertaining to Library Committees, acquisitions, library budgets, staff, publications, circulation of library material, library holdings and collections, and grants and awards. The collection documents the work of the Libraries Administration and the unit libraries within the Libraries' system. UA SC 50 and TC 32 consists of enrollment forms, correspondence, budget information, minutes, and six audio cassettes recording the "Continuing Education: Library and Information Needs" conference. The conference was sponsored by the University of Manitoba Libraries, Public Library Services, the Manitoba Library Association, and the Continuing Education Division of the University of Manitoba. The photograph collection (PC 47) consists of 7 photographs depicting the opening of the Carolyn Sifton Wing of the Elizabeth Dafoe Library. MC 5 consists of three maps. PC 5 consists of photographs depicting the opening of the Carolyn Sifton Wing as well as library employees. Two of the maps are identical and entitled Transportation Map (of) Greater Winnipeg, showing street Car Trolley Bus and Bus Lines. These maps, published by the Winnipeg Electric Company, depict the various public transportation routes available in 1941 Winnipeg. The third map is a map of Manitoba, published in 1897 with the authority of the provincial government of Manitoba by the Bulman Brothers and Co. Map Engravers of Winnipeg.

The fonds consists of a diary written by George Black, who describes his journey from Winnipeg by steamer up the Red River to bring relief to settlers distressed by the flood of April 22-28, 1897. It is a leather bound account book containing Black's penciled diary and a record of mail and supplies delivered.

The A90-32, A94-03, A99-72, A02-19, and A02-33 accessions contain both personal and business records reflecting Ewanchuk's career as both an educator and writer. Included are brochures, correspondence, and clippings regarding his work with the School Board as well as professional certificates held by his wife, Muriel Ewanchuk (ne Smith), handwritten and partially typed manuscripts of East of the Red, Spruce, Stone and Stamp, Pioneer Settlers: Ukrainians in the Dauphin Area 1896-1926, Pioneer Profiles: Ukrainian Settlers in Manitoba, Vertical Development Volumes 1 & 2, Vita: A Ukrainian Community, Monakh Makarii Makarenko, and East of the Red: Volumes 1 & 2. In addition to textual material, the collection contains 129 photographs which were included in Dr. Ewanchuk's various publications. In addition, 56 audio recordings with Ukrainian pioneers were included in these accessions.

The A04-129 accession consists of Michael Ewanchuk's papers pertaining to his career as the Inspector of Schools, educator and organizer of the Ukrainian curriculum at the public schools. The fonds also represents his vast interest in Ukrainian Canadian settlement in Manitoba. It contains biographical information including his degrees, numerous awards and recognitions, correspondence, Ukrainian Canadian personality files, manuscripts - Vertical Development II-III, Growing up on the Bush Homestead, newspaper articles, book reviews, newspaper clippings, scrap books, information on various Ukrainian organizations, and 1192 photographs, postcards, illustrations, and slides depicting lives of Ukrainian pioneers - farms, churches, schools, organizations. The tape collection consists of 34 audio recordings of Michael Ewanchuk's interviews and comments on the life of Ukrainian pioneers in Manitoba. The A.06-55 accession consists of Michael Ewanchuk's papers pertaining to his career as the Inspector of Schools, educator and organizer of the Ukrainian curriculum at the public schools. The photograph collection consists of 903 photographs pertaining to his early years in Gimli, as well as to his marriage to his wife Muriel (nee Smith). Also included are 15 videocasettes of his visits to Ukraine, and 15 audio recordings pertaining to this visit.

The A12-76 accession contains records pertaining to Michael and Muriel Ewanchuk, as well as his parents Wasyl and Paraska Ewanchuk and other members of the Ukrainian diaspora in Manitoba, collected by John Lehr and David McDowell as part of their research for their biographical book, "Trailblazers: The Lives and Times of Michael Ewanchuk and Muriel (Smith) Ewanchuk" (Winnipeg: Carpathia Publishers, 2011). The collection includes original documents collected by Lehr and McDowell for their manuscript (including correspondence, memoirs, farm records, business and financial records, receipts, passports and naturalization records, and obituaries), correspondence, secondary research material, and photographic material. Some of the records appear to have been assembled by Michael for his own research.

The A.14-80 accession contains some family records, and memoirs, as well as Ewanchuk's military (RCAF) records, and photographs.

The fonds consists of manuscript notebooks of courses taken by E. P. Fetherstonhaugh at McGill University from 1897 to 1899. There are four folders. Folder 1 contains a manuscript notebook of Mechanics and Kinematics, a course taken by E. P. Fetherstonhaugh in Spring 1897. Folder 2 contains three manuscript notebooks of Machine Design, a course taken in Fall 1897, and Spring 1898. Folder 3 contains a manuscript notebook of Dynamics of Machinery, a course taken in Spring 1899. The back cover of the notebook holds two loose leaves of Electrical Engineering notes. Folder 4 contains two manuscript notebooks: Electrical Physics, taken in Fall 1897/Spring 1898, and Electrical Engineering, taken in Fall 1898/Spring 1899. Folder 5 contains a book: Essays and Addresses, Religious, Literary and Social by Phillips Brooks (1894) awarded to E.P. Fetherstonhaugh as a prize in the high school in 1895.

The fonds consists of one diary with entries from 1898 to 1935. The diary begins with a brief resumé of Reverend Dugald McIntyre's life followed by daily entries. The diary includes details about his working life, traveling, and details about the progress of his children, Campbell and Marjorie. The letters to D. McIntyre from 1913 to 1935 include a letter from Ella M. Hunt, wife of W.M. Hunt, letters of sympathy, and letters to McIntyre from his son, Campbell, regarding his college graduation. One sheet of sermon notes is included.

The fonds consists primarily of drafts of numerous radio plays and television screen plays written by Cohen. The collection also contains significant correspondence (personal and business), reviews, and related material over a period of thirty years. Two scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings on the life and career of Cohen, as well as production photographs are also included.

The North-West Line Elevators Association origins can be traced back to 1899. The fonds contain the minutes of the original Board of Directors as well as a detailed sampling of Directors' minutes & memoranda up until the early 1970s. The collection is divided into four categories. The corporate records contain Directors' minutes, Executive Committee minutes, annual reports & the Public Relations Department records. The financial records contain auditors' reports, balance sheets, stock ledgers, tax returns, budgets, shareholders' information & Grains Claim Bureau assessments. The legal records cover demurrage action, court cases, agreements & contracts as well as Royal Commission on Box Car Distribution reports from the mid 1950s & Royal Commission on Transportation reports from the early 1960s. The operational records contain company correspondence, tariff information, Canada Grains Council reports & Canada Wheat Board reports, articles & pamphlets as well as lists of grain elevators. The fonds provide a nice cross section of the Association from its inception until the mid 1970s.
