Fonds consists of records interviews with Jim Nickels where he talks about Thomas Glendenning Hamilton, and Clinical Psychology. A recording of a conference on T.G. Hamilton is also included.

Travel photography and other material. The fonds are divided into 3 series: Lantern slides (wooden boxes), Lantern slides (cardboard boxes) and Albums. This includes his travels in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Central Asia (?), and the United States.

The scope and content of this collection is best described in the appraisal report of the National Archival Appraisal Board, dated January 20, 1983. The following is a quotation from that report:

"This collection will be of particular value to anyone studying social, political, land economic conditions in Winnipeg, especially from the mid-twenties to the mid-forties. In addition to chronicling events in that city, the papers trace the activities of prominent community leaders and the various associations of which Speechly was an active member. The unpublished autobiography provides a detailed account of the life and career of an active and vigorous civic leader.

The papers include correspondence, photographs, published articles, notes, pamphlets, and memorabilia and an unpublished autobiography of a prominent Winnipeg doctor over a period of almost four decades (1925-1961). The 1,329 letters to his daughter (Margaret Stansfield) written between 1925 and 1943, provide an interesting and relatively detailed chronicle of events and prominent people in Winnipeg. The collection is in excellent physical condition and occupies 75 cm."

The fonds consists of letters written to the family of Martin Platz while he was held as a Prisoner of War during the years 1941 until 1945. The fonds also contains information about parcels sent to Platz (from family, the Canadian Red Cross Society and the Scottish Red Cross Society), newspaper clippings, a timeline and map of Platz’s prisoner experience created by a family member and a USB stick containing some digitized images of newspaper clippings.

The fonds consist of Arnett’s personal and professional papers, correspondence, newspaper clippings and photographs.

The accession contains documents, manuscripts and photos covering Orysia Tracz’s career as a community activist and Ukrainian folk arts enthusiast. In addition to biographical materials that focus on many of her projects, the accession contains her correspondence (including letters to the press and other media); her published newspaper and journal letters and articles; manuscripts of mostly unpublished articles; the text of her most popular public lectures/presentations; and research materials, primarily articles, pamphlets, brief monographs, and newspaper clippings, on the pysanka (Ukrainian Easter egg), on Ukrainian folk arts, and on current affairs.

Although the provenance of this collection is Arnold O. Brigden, the bulk of the manuscript collection consists of incoming letters from Arnold's family in England and Toronto. These letters contain more information about Arnold's family than about Arnold himself. Order was imposed on these letters since there appeared to be no original order and in several cases, because the year was not indicated, it was not always possible to ensure that the letters are arranged in their original sequence. The letters cover the period from 1909-1971 with the bulk of them written during the Edwardian era and during World War I. Sixty-one letters were received by Arnold Brigden from his mother, Susie Brigden, who was the wife of a Methodist minister. Since Methodist ministers only stayed three years in one parish, the letters are sent from Barrow in Furness, Lewes, Peterborough, and Cottingham and they are kept in separate folders. These letters give a good idea of the problems and concerns of a Methodist minister's wife at the beginning of the twentieth century as well as concerns over World War I. Arnold's two sisters, Kathleen and Dorothy, wrote twenty-seven and eighteen letters respectively. These letters are an excellent source about young English women in the early twentieth century who are finishing schooling and finding their first jobs as teachers. Dorothy's letters are also a source of information regarding concerts and plays taking place in London. Throughout there is a continuing concern about money matters and the difficulties of maintaining a genteel lifestyle on a limited income.

The letters from Toronto are from Arnold's cousins, Bertha and Fred, as well as from Arnold's Uncle, William, who was actively involved in Methodist church activities in Toronto. Fred Brigden was the son of Frederick Brigden, the founder of Brigden's in Toronto, and some of Fred's letters refer to business matters, especially after 1914 when Arnold became the manager of Brigden's in Winnipeg. However, Fred was a professional artist and since he was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and had exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy, his letters often refer to sketches or paintings which he was working on. Two of Fred's letters contain small sketches of work in progress.

Also included in the collection is a letter from Charles F. Comfort, written in 1971, to L.F. Smith, Vice-President of Creative Services of Brigdens Limited, Toronto, thanking Mr. Smith for sending Charles Comfort a compy of the commemorative book The First One Hundred Years. This book, written by Edward J. Nicholson in 1971, is kept in the Department. A second letter from Charles Comfort to Arnold Brigden discusses errors which occured in the earlier letter which Comfort sent to L.F. Smith as well as a general discussion of the commemorative book.

Only two written records were actually produced by Arnold Brigden himself. One is a brief postcard (c. 1956) and the other is his travel diary, Holiday Jaunts, which gives daily descriptions of holiday activities at Bear River, Nova Scotia in 1906, Port Sydney, Muskoka in 1907, and Felkstone in England where Arnold visited his sister Kathleen for a weekend in 1909.

This collection also contains thirteen dry plate negatives taken in 1908, when Arnold was still a young man and visiting his family in England, eleven glass slides of flowers and the Canadian Rockies, forty-two black and white photos taken in 1936 of the funeral of King George V and Wisley Gardens as well as a wedding picture of Arnold's sister, Kathleen, when she married Will in 1915. The photo collection also includes 132 35mm slides (c. 1956-1957) consisting of pictures of European trips, camping in the Canadian Rockies and flowers. As much as possible, the orginal order of the photograph collection has been maintained.

The balance of the collection consists of fifteen postcards, most of them showing the Royal Pavilion at Brighton, England, and two pamphlets of Wisley Garden published by the Royal Horticultural Society.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery also has a collection of Arnold Brigden's papers and further primary source material relating to Frederick Brigden, the founder of Brigden's in Toronto, can be found in the Baldwin Room, Metropolitan Toronto Library. This fonds consists of graphic material and textual records from Gabriel Gély documenting his life, particularly his time in northern Canada.

The collection contains the following research papers relating to Frederick Philip Grove: articles; a Grove bibliography project; a Grove biography project; books; correspondence; diaries; dissertation abstract; encyclopedia entries; lectures; radio debates; reviews; travel notes; 1892 passenger lists and materials by and about F.P. Greve. The collection does not contain any of Spettigue's own literary material.

The accession consists almost exclusively of photographs (and post cards) chronicling the private life of the Martynec family in Paris (1935-1941), German-occupied western Ukraine (1941-1944), the Karlsfeld and Berchtesgaden Displaced Persons camps in Germany (1945-1948), and in Winnipeg (1949-1951). Family members dated and identified most photographs. Apart from several 1941 Paris photographs of Olia Konovalets, widow of assassinated OUN founder and leader Evhen Konovalets (1891-1938), who fell victim to Soviet agent Pavel Sudoplatov in Rotterdam, there are virtually no photographs reflecting the political activities of Volodymyr Martynec during the years prior to 1945. The Displaced Person camp photographs, and those chronicling the family’s first years in Winnipeg, reflect their extensive participation in Ukrainian community life, and to a lesser extent political involvement. Photographs of close and more distant relatives and friends (in western Ukraine, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom and the USA) also make up a small part of the collection.

The papers contained within this collection cover, in part, the years from 1946 to 1988. Included are such items as minutes of various committees, correspondence, research proposals, annual reports, and research reports.

The accession consists of George Johnston’s wartime diaries, military documents, and memorabilia; French and German maps of northern France and Belgium; irregular periodicals/newsletters published by the 12th Canadian Field Ambulance unit/association; and a large collection of photographs.

This collection presents the University's role in the design and testing of the inlet and outlet models for the floodway. This collection contains a variety of formats, including film, photographs, correspondence, and test sheets.

For the most part, the correspondence in this collection is from R. L. Walker to Professor E. Kuiper. From January 26, 1962, to October 1, 1962, correspondence was exchanged with regard to testing procedures, ordering of supplies, staff overtime, and construction recommendations. Although a number of weekly reports were sent by Marshall Gysi (engineer in charge at the University of Manitoba) to R. L. Walker (project engineer at H. G. Acres), the collection does not include any of Mr. Gysi's copies of the reports.

The records relating to the plans and original data sheets of the Red River Floodway model designs span the period from November 1, 1961 to February 13, 1963. The construction and purpose of the inlet model are documented, as well as such information as examples of test data sheets. Also included is a data sheet containing the light and exposure information used in the photographs of the models. The material encompassing this section details the construction of the models and includes information on the rating curve, sketch, and contour plans.

Test data for the inlet and outlet models are supplied in the form of test data sheets, sketches of the models on the Red River, velocity cross-sections and photographs, extending from January 22 to October 4, 1962. The correspondence included with this section is useful because it details the testing procedures for the outlet model and all four stages of the inlet model. In addition, the results of the tests highlight this section.

The drawings in this collection depict topographical detail, inlet and outlet models in their various stages of testing, and the hydraulics laboratory at the University.

All the photographs and films were made between 1962-1963. These are black-and-white photos depicting various tests on the models. The 16mm films are also black-and-white, and show current testing and ice flow studies. They are silent films with a running time of approximately five minutes each.

The Red River Floodway Collection is a valuable source of information for researchers studying the design and construction of this flood control device. Although a number of weekly reports is missing, there is enough information to allow the researcher a clear picture of the trials and results brought by the efforts of the Civil Engineering Department. The photographs are an excellent visual source of information as well as a companion to the meticulous drawings.

The initial collection consists of several hundred unpublished poems written by Margaret Avison between 1935 and the late 1970s. The second accession, received in 1996, consists of correspondence from various literary associates between the 1950s and the mid-1990s. In several instances other writers and poets send samples of their work for Avison's comments. There is a lengthy correspondence between Avison and the American poet Fredrick Bock. The Collection includes two theses about the works of Margaret Avison and several of her unpublished essays and poems.

The third accrual consists of photographs, audiotapes, and material relating to Avison's work such as worksheets, manuscripts, published copies, and reviews. It also includes correspondence from the 1980s to 2001.

The fonds consists of two unpublished novels by Odon L. Ostrowski titled From Berlin to Winnipeg and The Holocaust in Poland: A Novel. The latter manuscript is a description of life during World War II in occupied Poland and in Nazi concentration camps as seen through the eyes of the writer who was, at the time, a Polish forced labourer.

The fonds contains literary manuscripts of most of her books, personal and professional correspondence, material pertaining to both her literary and academic careers, more than 1000 photographs, 33 audio-cassettes, 1 videocassette, and 3 computer diskettes. The A12-41 accession of the fonds consists of legal documents and correspondence relating to the Robertson v. Thomson Corp. class action lawsuit, as well as awards, portraits and other correspondence. The A12-133 accession consists of correspondence and a review of "A Terrible Beauty", a periodical on Heather Robertson and a National Magazine Awards Booklet, plus awards and portraits. The 15-005 is comprised of nine series, including: biographical & personal information; literary career; research material; publishing contracts; correspondence; areas of interest; photographs; tapes & electronic records.

The fonds consists primarily of drafts of numerous radio plays and television screen plays written by Cohen. The collection also contains significant correspondence (personal and business), reviews, and related material over a period of thirty years. Two scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings on the life and career of Cohen, as well as production photographs are also included.

The collection consists primarily of John Dorsey's personal diaries and lecture books as a professor at the University of Manitoba from 1910-1920. It tells much about life at the Broadway campus of the University of Manitoba.

The Zubek Collection arrived at the Department of Archives and Special Collections in sixteen boxes. Roughly half of the material consisted of raw data results from various psychological tests Profesor Zubek administered to candidates in the sensory deprivation program. While significant to Dr. Zubek and his colleagues during their tests, this material held little archival significance. Of far more permanent value are his notes, rough copies and correspondence with many editors of learned journals in which he published. There is considerable correspondence between Zubek and the many funding bodies that he approached for capital. The collection is also rich in correspondence and related materials from other scholars, associations, and organizations like NATO that funded his research. Press clippings, both laudatory and highly critical of Zubek's research, have been maintained as have his books and correspondence commenting on papers that he presented at international conferences. While in short supply, there are photographs documenting sensory deprivation experiments.

The collection is arranged into three series. First and foremost are the personal and business papers and diaries of Julius Degen. A second, smaller portion contains material relating directly to the Emmert Land Company, for whom Degen worked. The third contains various materials relating to land, as well as farm receipts.

The fonds consists of 48 farm account books of the Rance family farm, which offer an interesting insight into forty years of farm life. The Rance family history by Evelyn (Brown) Steeves, Leroy Rance's sister, covers the years 1905 to 1930.

The fonds consists of notebooks, correspondence, and a 1928 journal publication, including the notes and sketches which contributed to it.

The fonds consists of a diary written by George Black, who describes his journey from Winnipeg by steamer up the Red River to bring relief to settlers distressed by the flood of April 22-28, 1897. It is a leather bound account book containing Black's penciled diary and a record of mail and supplies delivered.

The fonds consists largely of correspondence between A. Bowerman, W. A. Burman and H.L. Thompson of The Copp Clarke Co. Ltd. publishing company, and E.A. Blakely of the Manitoba Department of Education about the preparation and publication of a textbook on the flora of Manitoba for use in the public schools of the Province. In addition, there is an undated missive from the Department of Education, Manitoba, titled The Course of Agriculture - For the Public Schools of Manitoba.

The fonds consists of one scrapbook containing postcards, letters, invitations, memorabilia, and photographs depicting life at Manitoba Agricultural College. PC 99 illustrates portraits and in situ shots of Charlotte Black and her sister, Elinor.

The fonds consists of one diary from a research trip to Sudan and Egypt in 1925, one scrapbook containing newspaper clippings, pamphlets and excerpts, a published biography of Robert Wardle, and a handwritten account of the genealogy of the Wardle family.
