Viola Bailey fonds

The fonds consists of two folders. Folder 1 consists of copies of Viola Bailey's teaching contract with the School District of Winnipeg Number One, her teaching certificate, and her pay receipt from the school division for the first half of 1927. Original copies of Bailey's class lists and grades from her grade three class at David Livingstone School are also in folder 1. Folder 2 consists of two copies of A Class and Field Book for Normal School Students, published in 1915 by The Copp, Clark Company. This workbook contained proper pedagogical procedure for students intending to become teachers.

The fonds consists of John Skirving Ewart's notes and draft of his unfinished manuscript, Political History of Canada. The fonds also contains material collected by Thomas Seaton Ewart while he was a student at St. John's College and while he was a civil servant in the Manitoba provincial government of John Bracken. This material includes the "First and Second Interim Reports of the Royal Commission Constituted to Inquire Into All Matters Pertaining to the Manitoba Agricultural College" submitted by Judge A. O. Galt in May 1917, and extracts from the "Report of the Royal Commission Constituted to Inquire Into an Report on All Expenditures for Road Work During the Year 1914" submitted by Judge G. Paterson. It also contains reviews on his book on waivers: Waiver Distributed (1917); correspondence with Prof. S. Williston, Harvard Law School (1917); newspaper clippings, transcripts of speeches by Premier Bracken, provincial government papers and correspondence of John Bracken. The photograph collections features photographs of John Skirving Ewart and a photograph relating to John Bracken's re-election bid in 1936.

The fonds consists of ten audio cassette tapes created by the Business and Professional Women's Club of Winnipeg Oral History project 1990. Each tape contains oral interviews with club members and details their reasons for involvement in the club. Interviewees were all long-standing members of the club and included: Winona Hockley, a retired schoolteacher; Olive Flett, also a schoolteacher; Jenny Kirkness, a Winnipeg accountant and former president of the BPWCW; Jean Miller, a librarian; Ida Fenwick, an accountant and holder of several positions in the club's executive including honourary president; Frances Lovat, a secretary and former member of the club's executive; Mabel E. Kent, a stenographer and former secretary of the club; Jessie Buckingham, a schoolteacher; Irene Grant, the first married female schoolteacher in Manitoba; Marguerite Hargrave, a court reporter and member of several BPWCW committees; Lily Hobbs, a secretary for the federal Department of Agriculture; and Beatrice Deeks, who worked for the federal government's unemployment office and a former second vice-president of the club. Interviews were conducted by Kimberly Kappel, Deanna Mallen, and Carole Vann. The fonds also consists of printed summaries of the interviews, which are arranged chronologically.

Bertram Brooker fonds

The collection contains correspondence, diaries, unpublished manuscripts, and copies of published writing. The twelve folders of correspondence, although primarily incoming, include exchanges between Brooker and other artists such as LeMoine Fitzgerald, William Arthur Deacon, and Pelham Edgar. His diaries consist mostly of fragmented excerpts of short, intermittent periods in his life. The heart of the collection is a core of his literary works, most of which have never been published. Most consist of original and second drafts showing evolutionary changes, corrections, and notations. There are thirty-five plays, portions of novels, seventy-five short-stories, essays (most of which are unpublished), and a considerable amount of poetry. Most of the poetry has been published by Professor Birk Sproxton in a book by Turnstone Press titled Sounds Assembling (1980). Several of the poems are in multiple drafts, though only a few are dated. Brooker's published writings on advertising remain with the family. Art work is not included in the collection. The balance of the manuscript collection consists of newspaper clippings, photographs, an account book, and other miscellaneous items. The collection also contains Brooker's private research library consisting of approximately 300 volumes, many of which are carefully annotated.

Indigenous Languages of Rupert's Land Collection

The collection consists of ephemeral publications and audio recordings related to the Indigenous languages of Rupert's Land. The fonds consists of three bound volumes. Volume 1 contains discourses on John 13.22, Matthew 7.11, and Luke 13.7 and is dated September 1, 1850. It could have been written by Bishop David Anderson. Volume 2 contains a day-to-day summary of the collections at St. John's Cathedral and is dated December 3, 1865 - March 26, 1882. Volume 3 contains questions and answers on the history of the primitive church and could have been written by Rupert's Land Bishop Robert Machray.

Folder 1 contains a carbon copy of a January 1941 confidential report by Tracy Phillips to Associate Minister, Department of National War Services, on European immigrants in Canada regarding consolidation of public opinion among Canadians of East European ethnic origin for the war effort. Included are carbon copies of a December 1940 letter from Tracy Phillips to Colonel James Ness, President of the Association of Canadian Clubs, and a January 1941 telegram from Tracy Phillips to professor Watson Kirkconnell. Folder 1 also contains a February 1941 letter from T.A. Crerar to John W. Dafoe (1866-1944), a 1925 Government Railway of Australia First class Imperial Press Conference pass issued to Mrs. Dafoe, and the work Extract from Political Studies: J.W. Dafoe and Lionel Curtis - Two Concepts of the Commonwealth (vol. VIII, No. 2, June, 1960). Folder 2 contains eleven letters to M. S. Donnelly from various people on the subject of the biography of J.W. Dafoe that M.S. Donnelly was writing.

The fonds consists of personal papers documenting his participation in several national and international committees, his scientific studies and achievements, his role as chancellor of the University of Manitoba and various other personal papers covering his multi-faceted career. The 2009 accrual (A.09-47) consists of seven series. They include biographical information, articles and conference papers, student notes, teaching material, atomic mass conference in Winnipeg, correspondence, and photographs and drawings (PC 121). The A.11-80 accrual contains 12 series. They include: biographical information, speeches, Advisory Committee on Nuclear Safety, correspondence, University of Manitoba historic plaques project, books, conferences, University of Winnipeg, research material, photograph collection, tape collection, and oversize material.

John W. Dafoe fonds

The fonds consists of Dafoe's personal and political records, including diaries, correspondence, speeches, editorials, articles, memoranda, reports and news clippings. Included are two unpublished diaries: one written in 1919 while Dafoe attended the Paris Peace Conference, and the other written in 1923 while at the Imperial Conference. Correspondence ranges from 1896 to 1944 and is most complete in the years immediately after the First World War. Dafoe had many correspondents all over the world, most of whom dealt with public affairs, economic and political issues, and international activities. Included in the fonds are sixty-six speeches, mostly of a political nature, and which range in date from 1911 to 1943. There is also a collection of his writings, including his Manitoba Free Press editorials from July to October of 1917, and 25 reports and research compilations on a variety of subjects. Newspaper clippings include reviews of his books and articles. Other miscellaneous material includes the Dafoe family tree, memorials written by friends and peers, and a semi-biographical sketch of Dafoe's early years written by his sister, Mrs E. Emerson. Archives & Special Collections also houses an ancillary collection, in microform format (MF 15), of his printed Manitoba Free Press editorials from 1928 to 1944.
