The fonds consists of biographical material, correspondence, drafts, and versions of Dorothy Livesay's writings of all genres. The records are divided into five categories: autobiographical, biographical, bibliographical, business papers regarding her writing and her personal business papers. The remainder of the manuscript collection consists of plays, reviews, poems, short stories, essays, talks and addresses, and memoirs. The photograph collection contains pictures of Dorothy Livesay, her family and friends, and places and buildings. The tape collection consists of conversations between Livesay and others, interviews, poetry readings, radio broadcasts, music, and memoirs.

Folders 1-44 are arranged in alphabetical order by last name, folders 45-50 are arranged by title and subject, and folder 51 contains fragments of reviews.

Biography

This series contains a variety of records from all aspects of Livesay's life, including records relating to her political and social activities with Amnesty International, the League of Canadian Poets, and the Canadian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies. Other associations included are the Association of Canadian University Teachers of English, the Canada Council, the Canada-USSR Association, and the Canadian Authors Association. The series also contains records about Livesay's working career. Also of interest are miscellaneous family documents, such as report cards and certificates and materials relating to her mother Florence Randal Livesay, her father John Frederick Bligh Livesay and her husband Duncan Cameron Macnair. Also included are Dorothy Livesay's theses written for the Sorbonne and the University of British Columbia.

The collection consists of photographs of Livesay, family members, friends, and fellow writers. There are photographs of family homes and other places where Livesay has lived and worked, notably Manitoba, British Columbia, and Zambia. In the listing, identifications transcribed from the photographs themselves are placed within double quotation marks. Many of the photographs are held also as slides and negatives, a few in slide or negative form only: the notations "P," "S"' and "N" beside the item number indicate the formats (Print, Slide, Negative). All negatives are stored in Box #4. Slides are stored separately in the slides cabinet.
