Dieter Roger was born in 1927 and has published several books on a variety of topics. His works are primarily concerned with German immigrants and their adaptation and contributions to Canadian life. In 2000, Roger published Eckhardt-Gramatté Gedenkschrift fur das Familiengrab in Berlin-Wilhelmhagen, a monograph detailing the pre-immigration life of the Eckhardt-Gramatté family of Winnipeg and their familial gravesite in Germany. Roger has served as President of the Manitoba chapter of the German-Canadian Historical Association and has published books and articles in both English and German.

Custodial history

The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Dieter Roger in 2000.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of two folders. Folder 1 contains three photocopied articles and the preface from A Chorus of Different Voices: German Canadian Identities, edited by Angelika E. Sauer & Matthias Zimmer, New York: Peter Lang, 1998. A Chorus of Different Voices was based on a workshop that took place in Edmonton in October 1996 with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German-Canadian Studies Foundation, Winnipeg, the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts, and the German-Canadian Business and Professional Association of Alberta. The articles are "Deconstructing German-Canadian Identity" by Matthias Zimmer, "As I Experienced Them Myself: The Autobiographical German-language Immigrant Woman in Prairie Canada, 1874- 1910" by Royden Loewen, and "The 'Ideal German Canadian': Politics, Academics and the Historiographical Construction of German-Canadian Identity" by Angelika E. Sauer. All three articles chronicle the German-Canadian immigrant experience, and particularly how the new immigrants attempted to negotiate a position with the host Canadian society. The second folder contains a German newspaper article from the Kanada Kurier, dated September 30, 1999. The article, written in German, is entitled "Denkmalschutz und Ehrengrab: Dr. F. Eckhardts Familien-grabmal in Berlin."
