Administrative history

The Dean is the highest governing position within a faculty. According to By-law 14.00 of University Governance each faculty will have a dean who shall be the senior academic and administrative officer of the faculty. The Dean shall be responsible to the President in the administration of the faculty and exercise general supervision and direction over the faculty, including its staff and the students registered in the faculty. Professor M.A. Parker was the first Dean of Arts and Science and the University's first professor. In 1938, he resigned and was replaced by Dr. H.P. Armes.

Custodial history

The series was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections in several accessions between 1984 and 1989 by the Faculty of Arts Dean's Office.

Scope and content

This series, primarily covering the years 1960 to 1979, relates to the administration of the Faculty of Arts and its many departments. There is significant documentation concerning the Faculty's relationship with the University's affiliated colleges, Senate, other University bodies and non-University organizations. There is substantial correspondence with all of the Faculty's departments, the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Senate, and the Research Board. There are also detailed records for many of the Faculty's committees including the Course Change and Approvals Committee, the Dean's Review Committee, the Promotion Advisory Committee and the Faculty Library Committee, as well as records for University-wide committees in which the Dean of Arts played a role. The series also contains minutes of both the Dean's Council and Faculty Council of Arts and Science.
