Administrative history
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba was founded in 1886 under the name of "The Chartered Accountants' Association of Manitoba" by Act of the Legislature of Manitoba. By 1913 the Association was continued and its name changed to its present name "The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba". Its mandate, as a self-regulatory professional body incorporated under The Chartered Accountants Act, is to serve the public interest through the development and enforcement of high standards of qualification and practice. In 2002, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba was the largest professional accounting body in Manitoba with over 2,500 members and nearly 300 students. The Institute is governed by a Council and headed by an elected president, who serves a one-year term. The 17-member Council, which includes two lay members representing the public, is supported by The Institute's Chief Executive Officer and a staff of ten. The Manitoba Institute and its counterparts across the country are members of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
