Histoire administrative

The Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) is a representative organization of people in public relations in Canada. In 1987, the CPRS consisted of eleven affiliated chapters across Canada with a total membership of over 1,500 people. In 2007, it had grown to include sixteen member societies. Its objectives are to become the focal point for professional development, a forum for the discussion of mutual interests and problems, and a medium to deal with concerns, quality, and direction of public relations activity in Canada. The CPRS is governed by a national body in which each member society has representation. The national body co-ordinates society activities. The Manitoba Chapter offers a series of programmes, workshops, and conferences geared to inform members of trends, ideas, and processes that are likely to be of importance to the public relations function.

Historique de la conservation

The papers of the Canadian Public Relations Society Inc. (Manitoba) were deeded to the University of Manitoba on September 9th, 1987. Special thanks go to Bob Raeburn who alerted the Department of the Society's interest in establishing its archives on campus. Signing the deed of gift on behalf of the Society was Andrea Lang and R. H. Drain and for the University, Al Sims, University Council. Additions to this collection were received by the University of Manitoba in 1988, 1989 and 1993. These new records were incorporated into the existing collection in 1996 by Don Kroeker. At this time a seventh box was added to the collection and an updated container list was compiled.

Portée et contenu

With the addition of the new instalments, the collection now consists of .78 metres (32.5 inches) in seven (7) storage boxes. It contains working files of the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Public Relations Society. These include: By-Laws and Regulations; Manitoba executive meeting minutes from 1976-1993; annual general meeting minutes and reports from 1973-1993; financial statements; correspondence; job descriptions; records on educational programs and accreditation procedures; membership lists, surveys and correspondence; society newsletters and publicity materials; and records from several national CPRS events held in Manitoba including the "Progress '70" Conference. The photograph collection (PC116) contains an extensive pictorial record of the "Progress '70" Conference as well as photos of a number of other official functions.
