Histoire administrative

The Alpha Omega Alumnae, an organization of women university graduates of Ukrainian descent, was founded in 1958 by a small group of twelve women with a desire to promote and foster Ukrainian cultural activities within the broader community. The organization has focused on promoting the work of amateur and professional artists of Ukrainian origin. The visual and performing arts have been supported with art exhibitions, musicals, recitals, lectures and readings by published authors. In the 1960s, in collaboration with the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Alumnae sponsored a major show of the works of internationally known sculptor Alexander Archipenko. This was followed by a show of the art of William Kurelek. Interest in contemporary literature led, in 1978, to a Canada-wide writing competition which called for stories based on experiences of "Ukrainian Life in Canada". In celebration of Winnipeg's Centennial, the Alumnae honoured those women of Ukrainian descent who had graduated from the University of Manitoba prior to 1940. This resulted in a publication entitled The Beginnings: Ukrainian Women Graduates, University of Manitoba. In 2008, the Alumnae celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with a major celebratory musical event and a "Garden Party" honoring the founding members.

Historique de la conservation

Early records of the Alpha Omega Alumnae were placed "on deposit" with the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre. The Alumnae retained original title to the records. In 2009 the Alumnae reacquired these, and together with other material held by individual members, donated the fonds to the University of Manitoba Archives and Special Collections. New material was added to the fonds in 2010.

Portée et contenu

The records of this fonds have been arranged in their original form, retaining the file/binder inscriptions as file titles in the finding aid. The fonds consists of the scrapbooks (central records) comprise the first series in the collection. Records created by Past Presidents of the Alumnae are found in the second series. Committee records, which were kept separately from the Central Records, form the third series. The forth series, General Records, group items generated by some officers/members in an official capacity. As such, it follows the same functional principle as series two and three, but uses thematic file titles. The last two series, however, are artificially created subject files formed from scattered records in the accessions and memorabilia. Photographs and posters not contained in the scrapbooks have been transferred to Photograph Collection (Pc 290, A.09-91) which also contains Alpha Omega Alumnae's 50th Anniversary Album. The audio recordings have been transferred to Tape Collection (TC 150, A.09-91).
