Evelyn Shapiro, C.M. was an internationally respected speaker, researcher, educator, an expert on aging and health care issues in Manitoba, and a passionate advocate for geriatric care in Canada. She was a professor for more than 20 years, and later a senior scholar, in the Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. Shapiro was well-known for developing and implementing Manitoba's provincial home care program -- the first such program in Canada. As a senior policy adviser to the Minister of Health, in the Manitoba provincial government, she was a consultant with health care professional organizations and served on health advisory committees. Her research was instrumental in developing similar programs in other parts of Canada. Shapiro received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, University of Manitoba (2000), the Medal of Honour from the Canadian Medical Association (2001), the Order of Canada (2007), and the Order of Manitoba (2008). She died in Winnipeg on November 10, 2010.
